Job description

Requisition ID: 101220

Job Category: Energy

Location: Mississauga, ON, Canada

Join a company that is passionately committed to the pursuit of a better world through positive change. With more than 70 years of business and technical expertise in mining, energy, and infrastructure, our 10,000 colleagues in 150 countries tirelessly work toward bettering the industries in which we operate. With practical solutions that are safe, innovative and sustainable, we think globally while acting locally. Are you looking for an opportunity to join a diverse group of professionals who are committed to remaining exceptional? We look forward to hearing from you.

Our energy expertise in the oil and gas sector comprises the entire value chain - upstream, midstream, and downstream; and in the power sector includes thermal, nuclear, waterpower, renewable, hybrid, transmission and distribution, and grid modernization. Join our vision of a low-carbon world and help make positive change!

Are you looking to take the next step in your career? Hatch is currently seeking a highly motivated Senior Civil/Structural Engineer – Nuclear to join our team in Mississauga/Bowmanville.

The global energy transition is upon us. As we shift to a low carbon world, meeting the growing demand for energy will require revolutionary thinking and a variety of resources. While the market is challenging, these challenges present the biggest opportunities, and catalysts for change.

In the nuclear sector, we are busier than ever. We believe in the power of this carbon-free power source in our fight to tackle climate change. Our teams are supporting the nuclear power renaissance with projects supporting existing plants, small and advanced modular reactor designs, nuclear sustainability for waste processing and volume reduction, long-term storage, and fusion energy development – to name just a few.

If you’re an entrepreneur with a technical soul, we want to hear from you. Join our team today and help make a consequential difference!

You will be a part of our growing nuclear team where we ensure world-class project delivery through the skills of our people, methodologies, governance, and systems. Responsibilities and duties will include, but not be limited to:

  • Lead and deliver civil/structural engineering design and analysis for nuclear facilities, including safety-related and non-safety-related structures
  • Prepare engineering work packages ensuring budgets and schedules are met
  • Define civil/structural project requirements as they relate to scope, cost and schedule
  • Develop and/or review civil/structural deliverables such as design basis documents, structural calculations, drawings, technical specifications, datasheets, and foundation, embedment, anchorage, and pipe/equipment support designs
  • Apply nuclear codes and standards (e.g., CSA, ACI, AISC, ASCE, ASME) in regulated environments
  • Perform seismic analysis and qualification of structures, systems and components
  • Support refurbishment and life-extension scopes, including structural condition assessments, concrete aging management, and field engineering
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams (mechanical, electrical, seismic, geotechnical, and construction)
  • Provide technical oversight, checking, and mentoring of junior and intermediate engineers
  • Provide input to engineering, operating and capital cost estimates
  • Actively manage relationships with clients and vendors

You bring to the role:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering from an accredited university (Master’s degree considered an asset)
  • A registered professional engineer in Ontario, or eligible to obtain
  • Valid security clearance for Canada, or the ability to obtain
  • Minimum 10 years’ experience in project engineering specific to civil/structural design
  • Working knowledge of seismic analysis, reinforced concrete, steel design, and nuclear facility design principles
  • Experience with nuclear, power generation and other highly regulated industries, and working inside a Nuclear Quality Management System compliant with CSA N286 and/or NQA-1
  • Familiar with the grading approach for engineering and procurement activities
  • Sound understanding of design engineering codes and technical standards, specifically NBCC, OBC, CSA A23.3 (Concrete Design), CSA S16 (Steel Design), and the relevant CSA N-series standards, including CSA N291 (Requirements for Nuclear Safety-Related Structures), CSA N287 (CANDU Concrete Containment Structures), and CSA N289 (Seismic Design and Qualification). Exposure to US nuclear codes such as ACI 349 or ASCE 43 is a plus, but not required
  • Experience with STAAD.Pro, SAP2000, GTSTRUDL, ANSYS, SAFE, or similar civil/structural analysis software
  • Experience with construction and commissioning
  • Familiarity with the Canadian nuclear industry and clients such as Ontario Power Generation, Bruce Power and Canadian Nuclear Laboratories
  • Experience with Engineering Change Control (ECC) processes within the Canadian nuclear industry, including CANDU station configuration management systems
  • Experience with refurbishment / life-extension projects — structural condition assessment, concrete aging management (alkali-aggregate reaction, rebar corrosion, prestress loss), and containment structural integrity testing — considered an asset
  • Preference for those with DTL or DE qualifications at Canadian nuclear facilities

Base salary range: $131,000 - $181,000
