The School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences is a large, collaborative and multi-disciplinary school in the Faculty of Science at the University of New South Wales with over 170 academic, research and professional staff. In 2025, the school obtained $22M in research funding, produced over 800 scientific publications and is frequently rated among the top schools across UNSW in student experience surveys. The School incorporates a broad range of disciplines, enabling comprehensive education and research in the broad fields of Earth Science, Environmental Science, Physical Geography, Climate Science, Evolutionary Biology, Ecology and Marine Science and Oceanography.

The Associate Professor will contribute to high-quality research, teaching, and research student supervision in the field of conservation biology, with a strong emphasis on amphibian diversity, ecology, and the translation of scientific knowledge into conservation action and policy.

The role is expected to develop and lead research programs that address pressing environmental challenges, particularly those affecting amphibian populations and ecosystems.

About The Role

Level D ($185k - $204k) plus 17% Superannuation and annual leave loading

Specific Responsibilities For This Role Include

  • Conduct original and innovative research in Environmental Sciences and related disciplines, actively contributing to the advancement of knowledge in the relevant subject area, independently and collaboratively, contributing to national and emerging international impact.
  • Publish in high-ranking journals, provide reports to funding bodies, and engage in public communication of research outcomes.
  • Lead significant research proposals and secure substantial research income from competitive grants and end-users, consistent with national leadership standards.
  • Establish and grow research groups, participate in major collaborations, and contribute to the commercialisation of research outcomes.
  • Build and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders including government, museums, industry, research centres, and universities.
  • Supervise Honours, Masters and PhD students to timely completion, recruit HDRs based on research reputation, and mentor postdoctoral fellows and colleagues.
  • Apply a well-defined teaching philosophy and critically reflective practice to inspire student learning and foster a positive attitude towards education.
  • Design, develop and deliver high-quality learning activities, assessments and feedback across undergraduate and postgraduate courses, using diverse approaches and digital platforms in alignment with UNSW policy.
  • Provide leadership at School and University levels, including School meetings, open days, and strategic planning.
  • Align with and actively demonstrate the Code of Conduct and Values.
  • Cooperate with all health and safety policies and procedures of the university and take all reasonable care to ensure that your actions or omissions do not impact on the health and safety of yourself or others.

About The Successful Applicant

To Be Successful In This Role You Will Have

  • A PhD in a related discipline, and/or relevant work experience.
  • Significant track record in research leadership with outcomes of high quality and high international impact with clear evidence of the desire and ability to continually achieve research excellence and deliver research leadership.
  • Proven commitment to proactively keeping up to date with discipline knowledge and developments.
  • Demonstrated leadership in building engagement and partnerships with the profession and industry.
  • Excellent record of recruiting and supervising high calibre students.
  • Evidence of ability to support and inspire students from diverse backgrounds and support student equity diversity and inclusion initiatives.
  • Demonstrated experience in teaching and learning design using a range of pedagogical approaches, development and delivery of courses and programs, at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level.
  • Experience of implementing educational technologies and online delivery methods.
  • Evidence of teaching effectiveness and passion for educational excellence and fostering this in others.
  • Evidence of highly developed interpersonal and organisational skills.
  • An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
  • Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
