Job description

We are seeking a seasoned forensic engineer to join our claims and risk management team, delivering in‑house forensic engineering consulting focused on electrical fire origin and cause investigations.

Responsibilities

  • Investigate losses to determine the origin and cause of fires, explosions, and product failures through on‑site inspections and forensic evaluation.
  • Conduct field investigations of structure fires, vehicle fires, and equipment failures, documenting work and collecting evidence such as witness interviews, fire service reports, media coverage, security video, and product recalls.
  • Analyze and identify the root cause of losses by applying established fire investigation methodology and the scientific method, detailing assumptions and conclusions.
  • Use expertise to decide on the most plausible failure reason, assess design, installation, and maintenance compliance with industry standards and building codes, and differentiate between design error, manufacturing defect, improper maintenance, and external factors.
  • Interact with customers to explain the investigation process, gather information, coordinate site access, and communicate findings professionally without making coverage decisions.
  • Provide engineering opinions and technical assistance to claims professionals, leadership, and other stakeholders, preparing clear, precise reports and letters for non‑technical audiences.
  • Guide the technical direction of investigations, determine when external specialty expertise is required, review external forensic opinions, and conduct peer reviews of external investigations.
  • Contribute engineering expertise to multi‑disciplinary initiatives or emerging risk areas as needed.
  • Collaborate with other groups on multidisciplinary projects to solve complex losses and failures and provide recommendations for operationalizing engineering services strategies.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or postgraduate degree in Civil, Structural, Mechanical, Fire Protection, Electrical Engineering, or Applied Sciences.
  • Licensed as a Professional Engineer in Ontario (licensing in other provinces is an asset).
  • 8–10 years of professional experience in forensic engineering, structural investigation, fire or explosion investigation, or failure analysis in the insurance field.
  • Knowledge of fire dynamics, fire chemistry, and scientific/technical principles (e.g., flashpoints, vapor density, ignition temperatures).
  • Proven ability to communicate complex technical conclusions clearly to non‑technical stakeholders through verbal and written reports.
  • Experience reviewing and assessing external forensic or specialty expert opinions for technical accuracy.
  • Experience applying relevant legislation such as the Fire Protection and Prevention Act, Fire Code, Health and Safety Act, and Building Code.
  • Certification as a Fire and Explosion Investigator (CFEI).
  • Valid Canadian driver’s licence and access to a vehicle.
  • Experience testifying in court and prior qualification as an expert (preferred).
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel) and data management/analysis skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and strong analytical and problem‑solving abilities.
  • Experience analysing trends to support operational performance and managing multiple investigations simultaneously under strict timelines.
  • Ability and willingness to travel throughout Ontario on short notice and work in inclement weather and varying environmental conditions.

Benefits

  • Salary band: $105,000 – $154,400.
  • Compelling rewards package including base compensation, eligibility for an annual bonus, retirement savings plan, share plan, health benefits, personal wellness, and volunteer opportunities.
  • Hybrid flexible work model.
  • Outstanding career development opportunities and professional education support.
  • Competitive vacation package with an option to purchase five additional days off per year.
  • Employee‑driven programs focused on gender, LGBTQ+, origins, diversity, and inclusion.
  • Corporate wellness programs supporting physical and mental health.

Aviva Canada is an equal opportunity employer. We welcome applications from all qualified individuals and provide accommodations for persons with disabilities throughout the hiring process and during employment.
