Our client, a prominent leader in the financial services and insurance sector, is seeking a Senior Backend Test Automation Specialist & Quality Lead to join their digital transformation team. This hybrid role requires an experienced engineer with a deep technical focus on backend systems paired with the strategic vision of a QA Lead. In this position, you will take ownership of backend and API testing architecture, establish quality governance across engineering squads, and drive modern quality engineering practices to accelerate secure release cycles.

Responsibilities
Framework Architecture & Engineering: Design, build, and optimize scalable, robust backend and API test automation frameworks from the ground up using Java or TypeScript.

Strategic Quality Leadership: Define comprehensive test strategies, select appropriate test levels (unit, integration, component, E2E), and determine optimal automation boundaries versus targeted manual validation.

CI/CD & Observability Integration: Embed automated quality gates, risk assessments, and reporting mechanisms directly into deployment pipelines to support rapid, reliable software delivery.

Mentorship & Quality Standards: Drive continuous improvement, TDD/BDD methodologies, and shift-left testing practices by coaching developers and advocating for quality engineering across squads.

Cross-Functional Coordination: Collaborate with cross-functional technical teams, architecture groups, and business stakeholders to evaluate risk, manage dependencies, and monitor quality metrics.

Qualifications
Proven track record in API and backend test automation, including practical experience with frameworks like Playwright (request context), REST Assured, or TestNG using Java or TypeScript.

Deep technical understanding of microservices architecture, REST/SOAP web services, asynchronous messaging systems (e.g., Kafka, MQ), relational databases, and batch processes.

Hands-on experience developing test framework architectures independently, going beyond basic script execution.

Practical expertise in contract testing, mocking/stubbing strategies, test data management, and mitigating test flakiness.

Direct experience integrating automated test suites into CI/CD pipelines (e.g., Jenkins, Maven) with focus on performance, security, and observability metrics.

Demonstrated leadership capabilities with the ability to mentor developers, communicate technical strategies to diverse audiences, and establish quality governance.

Experience with Testcontainers, Pact, mutation testing, or ISTQB certification is considered a strong asset.

Our client operates in Canada. The company takes all reasonable steps to limit the number of positions in Quebec that require knowledge of a language other than French, and only requires it when necessary and its existing bilingual employees are unable to perform these duties. Based on an assessment conducted by our client, it has been determined that this position requires candidates to be fluent in English (both spoken and written). In particular, this position will require the employee to interact with centralized internal departments (e.g., Operations / HR / Finance / Legal / Contracts / Sales) that support the organization in Canada and that do not speak French.
