Job Summary and Requirements This competition is to fill 3 Auxiliary On Call Reinforcement (AOC-R) positions for the Whitehorse Correctional Center (WCC).

The Department of Justice is working to ensure Yukon remains a safe, secure, and healthy place to live and work. Under the direction of the Manager, Correctional Services, and as part of a team, this position carries out the day to day operational and program activities of the Whitehorse Correctional Centre. The Corrections Officer will work various shifts and is responsible for maintaining security, safety, good order and care of adult inmates by providing orientation, direction, guidance and programming. The focus is to engage the inmates in a process that provides maximum opportunity for change in an environment that is productive and supportive and in which they are treated in a respectful, fair and equitable manner. This position is classified as a Peace Officer under the Criminal Code of Canada.

Least Restrictive Measures The Corrections Branch uses the least restrictive measures with inmates, offenders, police prisoners and persons who have been granted judicial interim release that are consistent with the protection of those individuals, the public and staff members.

Essential Qualifications

Grade 12 or equivalent;

Completion of Correctional Officer Basic Training (or equivalent) and/or a Qualification Training Certificate;

Completed and certified to Use of Force;

Recent Corrections Officer experience supervising inmates while enforcing rules and regulations;

Experience giving direction, coaching, mentoring and providing feedback to individuals and/or groups.

Candidates who have education and experience equivalent to the essential qualifications listed above may be equally considered.

Additional Information Conditions of Employment:

Valid Security Clearance including vulnerable sector (required prior to first day of work);

Valid Medical Clearance (required prior to first day of work);

Valid First Aid and CPR certification (must be obtained within 6 months of hire);

Valid Class 5 driver's license (required prior to first day of work).

Successful Completion of the Corrections Officer Basic Training (or equivalent), or Qualification Training Certificate.

Successful completion of COPAT (or equivalent) within 6 months of application, or within 6 months of hire.

Job Requirements

Rotating shift work including weekends and statutory holidays;

Occasional travel within and outside the Territory;
