Job description

Who We Are

Metrolinx’s GO Expansion program is delivering more GO service across the network, including the capacity to deliver two-way service every 15 minutes or better on core routes. Work is already underway on new track, station renovations and infrastructure upgrades on parts of the Lakeshore, Stouffville, Kitchener and Barrie lines. The investment will generate thousands of new jobs and economic opportunities across the region. The ONxpress Civil Joint Venture is comprised of Aecon Infrastructure Management Inc. and FCC Canada Ltd. This multidisciplinary team leads the delivery of civil and track works, leveraging global expertise to introduce innovative solutions across the GO Transit network.

What You’ll Do:

ONxpress is seeking a Safety Advisor – Construction Training to support and strengthen our safety culture by delivering engaging safety training programs while leveraging hands-on field experience from heavy civil and rail construction environments. This position is primarily office-based and training-focused but requires a strong understanding of site safety operations, hazard management, and regulatory compliance gained through practical field experience.

  • Facilitate Health, Safety, and Security (HSS) training programs in both classroom and virtual settings.
  • Promote a culture of safety, quality, accountability, and continuous improvement through all training initiatives.
  • Develop, review, and update training materials, lesson plans, practical evaluations, and written assessments.
  • Work closely with construction, operations, and project teams to identify training needs and determine appropriate delivery methods.
  • Support the development and implementation of safety orientation programs, toolbox talks, and targeted safety awareness initiatives.
  • Participate in training review sessions to capture lessons learned and identify opportunities for program enhancement.
  • Track training effectiveness through metrics and feedback, driving continuous improvement of training programs.
  • Provide subject matter expertise based on construction site safety experience to ensure training content reflects real-world hazards, risks, and best practices.
  • Conduct hazard assessments and support the identification and mitigation of health and safety risks.
  • Assist with site inspections, audits, and compliance reviews to identify trends and training opportunities.
  • Support incident investigations, near-miss reviews, and root cause analysis, incorporating findings into training and awareness programs.
  • Collaborate with project managers, supervisors, and safety teams to support implementation of Health and Safety plans.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable legislation, industry standards, and company safety requirements.
  • Support ongoing safety initiatives and special projects as required.

What You Bring:

  • Diploma or Degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Construction Management, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in a Health & Safety role within heavy civil, infrastructure, rail, or construction environments.
  • Previous experience conducting safety training, facilitation, coaching, or mentorship activities is strongly preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), Canada Labour Code, CSA Standards, and related legislation.
  • Experience conducting site inspections, hazard assessments, incident investigations, and safety audits.
  • Understanding of construction safety practices, risk management, and safety program implementation.
  • Experience working on rail or transportation infrastructure projects is considered an asset.
  • NCSO designation (completed or in progress) is considered an asset.
  • Health and Safety certifications such as Working at Heights, WHMIS, Joint Health & Safety Committee (JHSC), Train-the-Trainer, or similar certifications are considered assets.
  • Excellent presentation, facilitation, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to engage and influence employees at all levels of the organization.
  • Strong computer and systems skills, including Microsoft Office applications.

Expected compensation for this role is between $80,000-$100,000 annually. Base salaries are determined according to multiple factors including skills, experience and potential impact on the role. Internal and external competitiveness are also taken into consideration. In addition to base salary ONxpress also offers a comprehensive medical and dental program, RRSP with company matching and the potential to participate in our discretionary, performance based bonus program.
