Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, Canada, Life and Health

Provides leadership, vision and direction of Munich Re Canada Life Branch (MLMC) finance function performed by Corporate Actuarial, Finance & Accounting, Tax, and regional Corporate Procurement departments. Leads Branch capital planning and the overall financial position including outlining the asset and liability strategy and the administration of treasury and liquidity management. Oversees all financial information related to valuation, solvency and planning issues, internal and external financial reporting, monitoring the performance of the company and its ability to meet future obligations. Clearly communicates results and forecasts to various levels across Munich Re. Contributes to Munich Re’s strategy and success at an executive level in order to achieve the vision and business plan of Munich Re Canada (Life).

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

Executive Profile and Industry Influence

Partners with industry associations and develops strong relationships and leadership roles with industry experts, regulators and working groups.

Continually briefs the senior management team on key industry trends and future influences so that they are knowledgeable and prepared when discussing future industry direction.

Represents Munich Re at external associations, industry functions, working groups and authorities with the aim to raise the profile of MLMC with regard to its services, products and support in the Life Insurance market.

Represents MLMC on financial topics globally within the Munich Re Group.

As required, serves on Boards of Directors, committees and other corporate governance roles.

Finance Responsibilities

Oversees the Appointed Actuary of the Branch

Responsible for all regulatory functions related to external authorities (OSFI, FSCO, AMF) including the Branch’s Regulatory Capital Plan. Manages the orderly and timely preparation of all local regulatory required reports and documents for submission including all necessary reinsurance-specific and financially-related figures, data and statistics about the Branch.

As the CFO of the Management Company MLMC;

Communicates capital needs with Home Office, as well as manages the overall financial position including outlining the asset and liability strategy and the administration of treasury and liquidity management. Leads discussions concerning accounting, financial reporting, treasury and taxation matters, as required.

Establishes and maintains effective Financial Reporting and Valuation teams to ensure the timely delivery of quality financial reports, including commentary and analysis for the Life and Health business of the Canadian Life Branch.

Oversees the sound management of a successful Finance and Accounting team responsible for the day to day administration and accounting of premium receipts, and claim expense activities.

Ensures the delivery of information and reports required by Home Office as part of the management and reporting of the reinsurance division; collaborating closely with the central teams responsible for reserving, accounting and controlling.

Spearheads all activities related to any Group-wide finance and regulatory projects for the Branch.

Consults and supports the business line Executives in the preparation of quote-proposals, as a basis for new treaties and treaty negotiations, ensuring the terms and conditions of risks comply with corporate regulations for the Branch’s life business with a view to profitability, growth, market conditions as well as client requirements.

Oversees the investment manager (MEAG NY).

Advises and supports the business line managers in matters such as changing pricing assumptions of the business and on unusual arrangements with regards to large block deals etc. and implications on tax, foreign jurisdiction and issues concerning capital position ratios.

Oversees the sound management of all regulatory and home office compliance functions.

Ensures close coordination with U.S. Life counterparts to realize North American synergies and deliverables.

Oversees the execution of procurement function for Canadian Munich Re entities.

Governance and Tax Management

Manages the government international and domestic tax audits maximizing efficiency and effectiveness; including fostering strong relationships with auditors, reviewing query responses and supporting schedules.

Manages all tax legal matters to resolution (Items in Appeals/Courts).

Develops relationships and partnerships with stakeholders at all levels within Munich Re to effectively manage the delivery of tax and other project services.

Annual Planning Process and Business Plan Development

Coordinates the development of the Business Plan according to the annual planning process requirement of Home Office. Ensures alignment of business strategy amongst all lines of business, according to the overall MLMC Business strategy and Home Office direction.

Provides regular updates to Home Office on the development of MLMC strategic initiatives.

Innovation Activities

Collaborates with client-facing teams on financially-motivated reinsurance business development, including Client presentations when appropriate.

Participates actively in the development and implementation of strategic and growth initiatives.

Supports all innovation activities by providing financial reporting and corporate oversight for the respective companies.

Supports related corporate finance activities, e.g. capital planning or M&A.

Establishes controlling processes for non-insurance activities.

Fulfills board mandates as needed.

People Management Responsibilities

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience as Senior Financial Executive.
  • FSA designation, Professional Accounting designation optional.
  • Proven ability to create, develop and implement creative financial management strategies.
  • Solid experience coordinating audit activities and managing reporting, budget development and analysis.
  • Demonstrated leadership, Executive presence and team management skills.
  • Experience representing company interests to government agencies, funding agencies and/or general public.
  • Proven history of creating, growing and sustaining a strong productive team.
  • Excellent analytical and abstract reasoning skills, plus excellent organization skills.
  • Keen strategic thinking, business acumen and problem solving skills.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal and influencing skills across all levels of the organization.
