Job description

At Imperial, we work every day to responsibly develop Canada’s energy resources – applying technology and innovation to supply affordable, accessible and reliable energy while reducing emissions. Imperial recognizes the important role we can play by advancing climate solutions within our operations and by providing lower life-cycle emission products to our customers. This effort is powered by a unique and diverse workforce fueled by a pride in what we do and what we stand for.

The success of our upstream, downstream and chemical, and corporate divisions is the result of the talent, curiosity and drive of our people. They bring solutions every day to optimize our strategy in energy, chemicals, lubricants and lower-emissions technologies.

Imperial honours diverse backgrounds so we can be a place where people can bring their full selves to work, no matter their identity, race, gender, sexual orientation, age, or ability.

At Imperial, we want you to come for the position and stay for the career. As an integrated company, we are uniquely positioned to offer you a wide range of career prospects and growth opportunities through the course of your career with us. We invite you to bring your ideas and help create sustainable solutions that improve quality of life and meet society’s evolving needs.

What role you will play in our team

The Assistant Country Occupational Health Manager supports the Country Occupational Health Manager in the delivery of occupational health services across all business lines and operating geographies, currently spanning Canada operating sites, including refining, offshore, oil sands, and pipeline. The role provides day-to-day clinical and operational leadership to a multidisciplinary Occupational Health Department (OHD) team — including occupational health nurses, case management advisors, and contracted occupational health practitioner resources.

The role sits at the intersection of clinical occupational medicine, regulatory compliance (OHS and worker’s compensation requirements, OSHA-aligned recordability practices, and applicable human rights legislation), and business partnership with HR, Legal, SHE, and site leadership. The Assistant Manager is expected to operate with a Corporate Value First mindset, balancing consistent, centrally designed process with the local and jurisdictional nuance the work demands, consistent with the “We Are ExxonMobil” leadership framework.

This position is a critical bench-strength and is expected to independently manage significant components of departmental future state vision, vendor oversight, and multi- jurisdictional program delivery.

What you will do

Clinical and Case Leadership

  • Provides direct clinical and case management oversight for fitness-for-work (FFW) determinations, return-to-work (RTW) planning, and accommodation case review, ensuring functional language is used in all employer-facing documentation.
  • Reviews and quality-assures WCB claims and recordability determinations for accuracy, maintaining the clinical/legal distinction throughout the process.
  • Serves as the escalation point for complex or disputed case management files
  • Oversees medical surveillance program delivery across jurisdictions (e.g., silica surveillance under Alberta OHS Code s.40 and Ontario O. Reg. 490/09) and confirms surveillance cadence, baseline, and periodic testing obligations are met.

Team Leadership and People Management

  • Provides day-to-day leadership, coaching, and performance management to OHD team members, including occupational health nurses and case management advisors, within the current structure.
  • Supports recruitment, selection, onboarding, and development of country OHD staff, collaboratively identifying training and staffing development opportunities consistent with the Talent Management System.
  • Manages workload distribution and coverage planning across a geographically distributed team supporting refining, offshore, oil sands, and pipeline operations, accounting for attrition, contractor backfill, and role consolidation activity.
  • Models “We Are ExxonMobil” leadership behaviors and holds the team accountable to the same standard, addressing “not yet great” behaviors in a timely manner.

Regulatory Compliance and Risk Management

  • Ensures OHD service delivery meets core OIMS (Operations Integrity Management System) requirements and applicable jurisdictional regulatory obligations across Canada.
  • Monitors and reports on key performance indicators, including recordability accuracy, return-to-work timeline adherence, accommodation file management, and FFW clearance turnaround, escalating against defined thresholds.
  • Maintains confidentiality boundaries consistent with HIA, PIPA, PIPEDA, and WCB claims integrity obligations
  • Identifies and escalates contract scope issues with third-party disability, absence, or case management vendors, including instances where administrative or clinical scope boundaries are not being respected.

Business and Stakeholder Partnership

  • Serves, upon request, as the occupational health representative interfacing with site management and SHE professionals to address health and safety issues at the site level.
  • Partners in parallel with HR and Legal on accommodation, disability, and return-to-work matters, proactively flagging escalation needs alongside clinical recommendations rather than sequencing them.
  • Assists with the development of business plans and budgets for OHD programs and services, including vendor service level agreement management and cost stewardship.

Continuous Improvement and Transformation

  • Supports implementation and enhancement of global best practices, common systems, and standardized programs across the OHD, including centralized case management and industrial hygiene functions under the future-state model.
  • Contributes to departmental transformation initiatives, including role consolidation, sequencing, and change management planning, and applying risk-mitigation thinking to reduce failure modes.
  • Collaborates with the global Medicine and Occupational Health (MOH) function and supports transdisciplinary initiatives, where relevant.

About you

Education, Training, and Licensure

  • Post-graduate training and qualifications in Occupational Medicine or Public Health (FRCPC certification or CCBOM/ FCBOM or equivalent)
  • 2–5 years of supervisory or management experience, preferably within an industrial or resource sector occupational health setting.
  • Current licensure or certification to practise in the relevant clinical discipline in all jurisdictions where the Corporation operates (minimum: Alberta; Ontario licensure/registration an asset given multi-jurisdictional scope).
  • Familiarity with clinical and occupational health surveillance standards relevant to the operating context

Scope, Working Conditions, and Decision Rights

The role operates within the Corporation’s accountability framework: the Assistant Manager is responsible for day-to-day execution, team leadership, and operational decision-making within delegated authority, escalating matters that exceed occupational health scope — including legal interpretation, adjudicative determinations, and matters requiring Country OH Manager-level decision — to the appropriate accountable party.

Travel to refinery, offshore, oil sands, and pipeline sites is required periodically to support site-level FFW, surveillance, and incident response activity. The role requires availability to support case escalations outside standard business hours where clinical urgency warrants.

Location

Edmonton, AB — with oversight across Canada operating sites, including refining, offshore, oil sands, and pipeline infrastructure
