Job description

The ALS Society of Alberta supports Albertans living with ALS and their families through every stage of the disease, while funding research toward better treatments and, ultimately, a cure. ALS moves fast, and so does our work. Every community fundraiser, every third-party event, every new supporter we bring in directly extends the support we can offer families across the province.

This role sits at the heart of that mission. You will be the face of the ALS Society in communities across Alberta, building the relationships and local capacity that fuel our work.

What We Offer

We know that doing meaningful work starts with supporting the people who do it.

  • Competitive salary of $85,000 to $95,000.
  • Comprehensive health and dental benefits.
  • RRSP matching program to help you plan for the future.
  • Generous paid time off, including vacation, flex days and caregiver days.
  • Opportunities for professional development and continued learning.
  • Mileage reimbursement and travel expenses for approved work-related travel.
  • A collaborative team that values initiative, accountability and new ideas.
  • The opportunity to build something lasting while making a meaningful difference for Albertans living with ALS and their families.

Position Summary

The Director of Fund Development leads the strategy, planning and execution of fund development for the ALS Society of Alberta. This is a senior role responsible for building a sustainable, diversified revenue base, including annual giving, donor campaigns, community and third-party fundraising, sponsorship, and the organization's first capital campaign.

This role sets the direction, the Coordinator (a new hire this Director will recruit and lead) executes much of the community-facing and event work day to day. The Director is accountable for the revenue strategy, the donor pipeline, and the organization's overall fund development capacity.

This is a build role as much as a run role. You will be shaping how the ALS Society raises money for years to come, not maintaining an existing system.

What You’ll Do

Fundraising Strategy and Revenue Growth

This is the core of the role: deciding where the organization's fundraising energy goes and building a plan that gets it there. Nothing else in the role matters if this isn’t right.

  • Develop and lead the organization’s overall fund development strategy, setting annual and multi-year revenue targets across giving streams.
  • Diversify revenue beyond current sources, building out annual giving, major gifts, monthly giving, corporate sponsorship, planned giving and grants as appropriate.
  • Identify, cultivate and solicit major donor and corporate prospects directly, this is a role that fundraises personally, not only through a team.
  • Set and monitor the fund development budget, including revenue projections, expense management and return on investment by campaign and channel.
  • Bring data and donor insight into decision-making, using giving trends and donor behavior to sharpen strategy rather than relying on instinct alone.

Capital Campaign Leadership

A capital campaign is a different animal from annual fundraising, longer timeline, bigger asks, higher stakes. This is the person who builds that engine from the ground up.

  • Lead the planning and execution of the organization’s capital campaign, including feasibility assessment, case for support, campaign structure and timeline.
  • Build and manage a campaign cabinet or leadership committee of volunteers and community leaders.
  • Identify and personally cultivate lead and major gift prospects for the campaign.
  • Report campaign progress to the Executive Director and Board, including risk factors and course corrections.

Donor Campaigns and Annual Giving

Recurring, predictable revenue is what lets the organization plan ahead instead of reacting quarter to quarter. This is where that stability gets built.

  • Design and oversee annual giving campaigns, including direct mail, digital and email appeals.
  • Develop donor stewardship strategy across all giving levels, ensuring donors are retained, upgraded and meaningfully thanked.
  • Set segmentation and moves management practices so donor relationships are tracked and nurtured systematically, not ad hoc.
  • Oversee the organization’s donor database strategy, in partnership with the Data Administrator, to ensure it supports campaign tracking, reporting and donor insight.

Team Leadership

You won’t be doing this alone for long. Part of the job is building the team that will carry community and event fundraising forward.

  • Recruit, hire and onboard a Community Engagement and Fundraising Coordinator.
  • Set goals, coach and manage the performance of the Coordinator, providing the mentorship a newer fundraising professional needs to grow.
  • Determine how community engagement, third-party fundraising and event work (including Side by Side for ALS) are resourced and prioritized, and delegate accordingly.
  • Build a fund development team culture that can scale as the organization’s fundraising program grows.

Board and Organizational Partnership

Fund development doesn’t happen in isolation. This role is the connective tissue between the fundraising strategy and the people who need to understand, fund and champion it.

  • Partner with the Executive Director on fund development strategy, board engagement and organizational priorities.
  • Prepare fund development reports and updates for the Board of Directors.
  • Support and coordinate board members’ involvement in fundraising, including major gift asks and campaign cultivation.
  • Represent the ALS Society of Alberta with major donors, corporate partners and community leaders.

What You Bring

  • Seven or more years of progressive fund development experience, including demonstrated success in major gifts, annual giving or capital campaigns. [VERIFY: adjust years based on internal benchmarking]
  • Proven experience personally soliciting and closing major gifts.
  • Experience leading or playing a significant role in a capital campaign is strongly preferred.
  • Experience managing or mentoring staff, or a clear readiness to build and lead a small team.
  • Strong strategic and analytical skills, comfort setting revenue targets and managing a budget.
  • Excellent relationship-building and communication skills across donors, board members, volunteers and community partners.
  • Experience with donor databases and CRM platforms.

How Success Is Measured

  • Total fund development revenue growth year over year.
  • Diversification of revenue across giving streams, reduced reliance on any single source.
  • Capital campaign milestones met, including feasibility, cultivation and gift closure targets.
  • Donor retention and upgrade rates.
  • Successful hire, onboarding and development of the Coordinator role.
  • Board and Executive Director confidence in fund development strategy and reporting.
  • CFRE designation is an asset but not required.
  • Knowledge of the Alberta non-profit and philanthropic landscape is an asset.

This is an opportunity to shape the future of fund development at the ALS Society of Alberta and leave a lasting impact on an organization making a real difference for families across the province.
