Scope

The Environmental Technologist provides technical, administrative, and field support to Engineering staff in the planning, coordination, implementation, and monitoring of environmental programs and projects. Working within the Utilities, Environment Section, the position supports the delivery of Surrey's environmental stewardship objectives through watershed management, fisheries and aquatic habitat protection, environmental monitoring, regulatory compliance, restoration initiatives, and capital project support. The role assists with environmental permitting and approvals, field investigations, environmental monitoring, data management, public education, erosion and sediment control compliance, and the delivery of environmental programs, including Surrey's Salmon Habitat Restoration Program (SHaRP).

Responsibilities

• Provide technical support in the planning, coordination, implementation, monitoring, and reporting of environmental programs and projects.
• Support the delivery of Surrey's Salmon Habitat Restoration Program (SHaRP), watershed initiatives, aquatic habitat enhancement, and environmental stewardship activities.
• Assist in the review and implementation of environmental permits, approvals, and regulatory requirements for capital projects, maintenance activities, and development-related works.
• Conduct field investigations, environmental monitoring, habitat assessments, fish salvages, and inspections of watercourses, riparian areas, restoration sites, and other environmentally sensitive areas.
• Assist with stream classification reviews, watercourse inventory updates, biological monitoring, environmental data collection, and GIS mapping.
• Maintain environmental databases, monitoring records, and technical information related to water quality, fisheries, aquatic habitat, biological resources, and contaminated sites.
• Assist Engineering staff with environmental reviews of capital projects and provide technical recommendations to support environmental protection and regulatory compliance.
• Respond to environmental inquiries from residents, contractors, consultants, regulatory agencies, and internal staff, and assist with public education and stewardship initiatives.
• Research environmental legislation, policies, standards, and best management practices, and prepare technical reports, correspondence, and supporting documentation.
• Operate specialized software to conduct calculations and make determinations; operates GIS software to inquire regarding property ownership, location, etc.
• Moderate physical activity. Requires handling objects of average-weight up to fifty (50) pounds or standing and/or walking for more than four (4) hours per day.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• A University degree or recognized diploma from an institute of technology in an area of environmental studies with two to three years work experience in project inspection, environmental monitoring, public education and instream field experience.
• Valid BC Driver's License.
Additionally, the successful candidate has:

• Working knowledge of environmental legislation, regulations, and best management practices related to fisheries, watercourses, riparian protection, erosion and sediment control, and environmental stewardship.
• Knowledge of watershed processes, aquatic ecosystems, fish habitat, environmental monitoring, and habitat restoration principles.
• Experience collecting, managing, and analyzing environmental data using GIS, databases, and Microsoft Office applications.
• Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to prepare technical reports and communicate effectively with diverse audiences.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with contractors, consultants, regulatory agencies, First Nations, community organizations, and internal stakeholders.
• Ability to exercise sound judgment, work independently, and contribute effectively within a collaborative team environment.
• High degree of professionalism, initiative, adaptability, attention to detail, and personal accountability.
