Job description

Our Equipment group is currently looking to add a Fleet & Equipment Manager to our growing team, based in Blackfalds or Calgary, AB.

We are seeking an experienced leader who has strong knowledge of heavy equipment and rolling stock fleet management within a multi-divisional operating environment. This individual has the proven skills, competencies, and capacity to oversee fleet availability, utilization, maintenance integrity, capital deployment, and disposal across a ~$135M asset base spanning two divisions, ensuring the right equipment is in the right place, in safe working condition, at the lowest total cost of ownership. This role will support 120–200 projects per year ranging from $2M to $150M in contract value.

Duties and Responsibilities

Fleet Strategy & Capital Planning

  • Own the annual capital equipment budget and multi-year fleet renewal plans, forecasting demand by asset class and division against project pipeline and seasonal needs
  • Lead buy/sell/lease/RPO decisions across all asset classes and maintain the master asset register and lease/RPO tracker
  • Present quarterly fleet reviews to the President covering capital spend, utilization, and forward recommendations

Equipment Availability & Project Mobilization

  • Coordinate equipment assignment and mobilization across divisions to meet project start dates, resolving demand conflicts as needed
  • Manage third-party rentals and supplemental leases when owned fleet falls short, negotiating rates and tracking costs
  • Respond to field equipment breakdowns with urgency, coordinating repair, swap, or rental replacement

Repair & Maintenance Program

  • Design and enforce a preventive maintenance program across the fleet, including regulatory certifications (CVIP, cranes, pressure vessels)
  • Provide day-to-day leadership to mechanic teams across both divisional shops, including hiring, performance management, and workload priorities
  • Track R&M costs against budget, flag underperforming assets, and manage parts inventory and vendor relationships

Equipment Costing & Financial Accountability

  • Establish and maintain internal equipment charge-out rates, ensuring accurate application in project cost reporting
  • Review monthly fleet P&L and utilization reports, recommending disposition or redeployment of underperforming assets
  • Manage fleet insurance, licensing compliance, and renewals

Procurement & Disposal

  • Source, negotiate, and execute equipment purchase agreements within delegated authority
  • Manage RPO agreements from initiation through conversion, monitoring credit balances and option deadlines
  • Manage the full disposal cycle for surplus/end-of-life equipment and maintain relationships with OEM dealers and auction houses

HSE & Regulatory Compliance

  • Ensure fleet compliance with Alberta and BC transportation and safety legislation, including CVIP and lifting equipment certifications
  • Manage interprovincial PST compliance as equipment moves across Alberta, BC, and Saskatchewan
  • Support incident investigation and corrective action for equipment-related incidents

Data, Reporting & Systems

  • Champion use of the PowerApps DTT system for field data capture and maintain the fleet management dashboard for real-time visibility
  • Ensure data integrity in the ERP (Eclipse) for asset transactions and support month-end close activities

Requirements

  • 10 years of progressive experience in heavy equipment and fleet management in pipeline construction, oil & gas, or related industrial construction environments
  • Demonstrated experience managing a fleet of significant scale (≥ $50M replacement value) across multiple geographies
  • Proven people leadership experience: direct supervision or functional direction of mechanics, shop technicians, or equipment tradespeople, ideally across more than one location
  • Strong mechanical aptitude with working knowledge of pipeline construction equipment (sidebooms, excavators, dozers, air compressors) and commercial vehicles
  • Experience owning or directly contributing to capital equipment budgets, buy/sell programs, and disposal processes
  • Proficiency with ERP or asset management systems for equipment cost tracking, work orders, and depreciation
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and manage preventive maintenance programs across a large fleet
  • Strong commercial acumen: ability to evaluate rent vs. own, assess repair-to-value decisions, and interpret asset-level financial performance
  • Familiarity with Alberta and BC regulatory requirements for commercial vehicles, cranes, and industrial equipment (CVIP, OHS, Motor Vehicle Act)
  • Working knowledge of interprovincial PST rules as they apply to construction equipment — including self-assessment obligations, provincial exemptions, and the implications of moving equipment between AB, BC, and SK

Preferred Skills / Qualifications

  • Red Seal Heavy Equipment Technician designation or equivalent technical trade certification
  • Post-secondary education in Business, Engineering Technology, or a related field
  • Prior experience in a fleet or equipment management role within a pipeline contractor or midstream construction environment in Western Canada
  • Experience with Eclipse ERP or equivalent construction-industry financial systems.
  • Exposure to PowerApps, Microsoft Power Platform, or equivalent field data capture tools

Benefits

We offer a comprehensive and competitive total rewards package that includes a complete range of employee benefits to ensure you have the tools necessary to manage, maintain, and improve your health and wellbeing.
