Job description
Salary Range: $59,341.48 to $72,981.33
OVERVIEW:
Reporting to the Service Supervisor, the Education Liaison will improve educational outcomes for children and youth in care, customary care, and in a Voluntary Youth Services Agreement. The Education Liaison coordinates educational supports and culturally responsive navigation support for children and youth in care. The Education Liaison helps to resolve issues that impact the children and youth’s learning, and strengthens the relationships amongst societies, schools, public school boards, First Nations’ school authorities, and community partners.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Preferred education is a Bachelor of Social Work Degree.
  • Must have a minimum of a Social Services Diploma or Native Child and Family Worker Diploma.
  • Must have two (2) years’ work experience in the delivery of social service programming targeting youth and families, preferably within an Anishinaabe community and/or organization.
  • Have a class ‘G’ Ontario Driver’s License, access to a personal vehicle and be able to travel.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, & ABILITIES:
  • Act as a navigator for children and youth in care within the school system and help to resolve issues that impact student learning (e.g., transitions between schools, suspensions, special education); and help children and youth in care to receive educational services and supports to help them achieve the educational goals that are relevant to them.
  • Strengthen relationships amongst schools, school boards/authorities, Agency and community partners and the member First Nations.
  • Facilitate access for children and youth in care to existing educational supports and resources in the school system or the community by providing information and referrals that address individual needs and both supports and reinforces strengths.
  • The resources and supports as Education Liaison may provide referrals to include specialized educational services, tutoring supports, mentoring resources, and training and/or skill development opportunities.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
  • Given the traditional practices of the Anishinabek, from time-to-time exposure to wood smoke and the burning of sacred medicines, including tobacco, sweet grass, sage, or cedar, may occur within the work setting.

    About Kina Gbezhgomi Child and Family Services:

    On April 1, 2012 Kina Gbezhgomi Child And Family Services transferred the direct service delivery and management of the prevention services inclusive of family and community support services to the First Nations. Each of the First Nations and Kina Gbezhgomi Child and Family Services has a Contribution Agreement outlining the roles and responsibilities of the agency and First Nation in this collaborative partnership inclusive of agency support and training, funding arrangements, service and financial reporting. Kina Gbezhgomi Child And Family Services completed this process as a transition phase to a fully integrated child welfare model in preparation for designation as a child welfare agency, and also to reflect the membership requests in relation to First Nation community based delivery of prevention services. VISION: Kina Gbezhgomi Child And Family Services will honour and support our family’s and community’s inherent authority to care for their children based on unity, traditions, values, beliefs and customs. MISSION: Our services ensure children are protected and stay connected with their culture, language and community while strengthening family and community relationships.
