BGC Central Vancouver Island (BGCCVI) is an independent nonprofit organization operating with the support of BGC Canada as one of over 665 clubs nationwide. As the largest childcare provider on Vancouver Island, we leverage decades of experience, reliability, and community commitment to operate 14 clubs stretching from Ladysmith to the Comox Valley. The Opportunity

BGCCVI operates with a $10.9M budget for the 2026-27 fiscal year, driven by a dedicated team of over 150 full and part-time employees. We are currently seeking a qualified, experienced professional to join our executive leadership team in the full-time role of Director of Finance

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director of Finance provides strategic leadership and oversight of all financial operations at BGCCVI, ensuring sustainability, effective operations, and risk management.

The Director of Finance is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the finance and accounting functions, including accounting department oversight, budgeting, forecasting, financial reporting, contractual deliverables, and compliance with funders and statutory bodies, while managing financial resources, staff, and assets. The Director delivers accurate, timely financial information to Executive Directors, Boards, and stakeholders to support informed decision-making and strong governance.

Financial Leadership & Strategy

  • Oversee complex operational and capital budgets, financial reporting, and cash flow to provide accurate, timely, and actionable insights for decision-making
  • Develop monthly forecasts and scenario alternatives to support decision-making and long-term planning
  • Establish and report on key performance indicators (KPIs) to improve organizational insight, identify areas for improvement and increase organizational responsiveness
  • Provide strategic financial advice to the Executive Director, leadership, and Board/Finance Risk and Audit Committee
  • Support funding strategies, grant applications, and budget development for external proposals
  • Advise on capital planning schedule, reserve management, and long-term financial sustainability
  • Lead documentation process and procedures within finance department including regular review and edits of the Finance policies
  • Identify financial risks and provide recommendations for mitigation
  • Lead the project to replace the current accounting program, including product recommendation, procurement and implementation of new software program to further the operational efficiency and financial reporting functionality of the organization
  • Improve timeliness, efficiency and usefulness of internal and external reporting
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of strategic plans and operational plans with a financial lens

Financial Management, Reporting & Compliance

  • Oversee the full accounting function, including review of bank reconciliations, journal entries, payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and statutory reporting
  • Contributes to the preparation of complex funding proposal budgets and grant application budgets to corporations, foundations, all levels of government, external associations and community partners
  • Oversee and lead the external financial reporting on organizational contracts including but not limited to $10/Day & MCFD Contracted Services
  • Ensures all statutory reporting and remittances occur on an accurate and timely basis (including all Payroll reporting, T4's, WCB reports, GST and Annual Information Returns)
  • Prepares and analyzes monthly operating statements for each department and distributes to Executive Directors, Program Directors, Board, and Finance Risk and Audit Committee for their information and action
  • Present information to the Board and to the Finance Risk and Audit Committee meetings; collaborates prior to the meeting with Executive Director and Board Treasurer to prepare documents for presentation
  • Oversee and monitor internal controls to ensure accounting activities are in accordance with established legal, regulatory and organizational policies and procedures
  • Lead process improvement within the finance department to reduce risk and ensure succession planning and cross training
  • Lead the annual audit process and manage relationships with external auditors. Effectively respond to any auditor concerns
  • Strengthen internal controls and financial processes to reduce organizational risk. Develop reasonability testing on more material items like payroll and audit findings

Operations, Systems & Team Leadership

  • Oversee day-to-day operations of the finance department to ensure efficiency and reliability
  • Recruit, train, supervise, mentor, and develop finance team of 3 members, made up of Finance Manager, Finance Coordinator and Registration Coordinator
  • Annual review and performance management for all direct reports
  • Lead the annual budgeting process
  • Ensure reliable and useful information is presented for budget, actual and variance information
  • Implement and optimize financial systems and tools to improve efficiency and reporting quality
  • Regularly assess, review, implement improvements and document standardized finance processes to improve accuracy, reduce risk and improve continuity
  • Enhance the accessibility and usefulness of financial information across the organization
  • Serves as primary contact for Agency banking relationships
  • Support insurance renewals
  • Advise on capital acquisition strategies and monitor capital investment and reserves
  • Implement more formal monthly reconciliations and close processes include monthly entries for balance sheet line items including deferred capital contributions, amortization, deferred revenue, payroll accruals and others

Qualifications

  • Criminal Record Check clearance required prior to employment

Experience

  • Advanced Accounting experience in the non-profit sector – mandatory
  • Formal leadership and staff supervision experience
  • Demonstrated ability to lead the finance teams of multi-funded Agencies
  • Experience in process mapping, new process implementation and change management an asset
  • Excellent project management skills and ability to produce quality work within tight time frames
  • Ability to summarize, interpret and synthesize complex information in a multi funded organization
  • Demonstrated ability to keep current and proactively share knowledge in the field of expertise
  • Knowledge of payroll and benefits administration
  • Knowledge of MS Office, including use of MS Teams presentation tools
  • Advanced competency in Excel
  • Advanced knowledge of cloud-based accounting software databases like Sage or Quickbooks

Professional Designation

  • Chartered Professional Accountant designation – mandatory

Working Conditions

  • This role offers a hybrid work arrangement subject to an alternative working agreement and suitability of workspace; however, employees are expected to attend the office on a weekly basis.
  • Some evening and weekend work required (In-person AGM, virtual Board Meetings and virtual monthly Finance Risk and Audit Committee meetings)
  • Attendance on site during the annual audit is required

Compensation

  • Wage Range - $93,600 - $117,000 per year, based on education and experience
  • Benefits include Health, Dental, BCI, LTD, AD&D, Up to 50% reduction on childcare fees, Paid certificate renewals
