Job Title: Mechanical Installation Technician

Job Description

The Mechanical Installation Technician assembles and installs conveyor systems and an advanced grid automation structure within a large distribution facility. You work in small teams to build, finish, and support commissioning of mechanical systems, using hand and power tools, lifts, and precise measurements to deliver a safe, high-quality installation.

Responsibilities

  • Assemble and install multiple conveyor systems and the grid automation structure within a new distribution facility.
  • Install and complete grid-related components, including grid install, cladding, false bottom totes, grid finishing, peripheral stations, maintenance areas, and charging stations.
  • Support commissioning and go-live activities by ensuring mechanical systems are correctly installed, aligned, and functioning as designed.
  • Work as part of small teams to plan, coordinate, and execute installation tasks safely and efficiently.
  • Use a variety of hand and power tools to perform mechanical assembly, fastening, alignment, and adjustments with high precision.
  • Operate scissor lifts and, where required, forklifts to access elevated work areas and move materials safely.
  • Perform mechanical installation work in a heavy-duty construction or industrial environment, including tasks at heights and on platforms.
  • Follow all safety procedures and site rules, including proper use of PPE and adherence to safe work practices.
  • Read and interpret measurements, levels, and layout requirements to ensure accurate placement and assembly of components.
  • Inspect installed components for quality, alignment, and completeness, and make corrections or adjustments as needed.
  • Collaborate with team members and supervisors to meet project milestones, including extended hours during peak periods.
  • Use personal tool sets that meet the required minimum standards to complete daily installation and assembly tasks.
  • Maintain a clean, organized work area and handle tools, equipment, and materials responsibly.
  • Report any safety concerns, equipment issues, or installation challenges promptly and participate in resolving them.

Essential Skills

  • At least 3+ years of experience in conveyor installation, construction labour, millwright work, welding, or similar mechanical roles.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and the ability to perform precise mechanical assembly and installation.
  • Proven experience using a wide range of hand and power tools in a construction or industrial setting.
  • Experience working in heavy-duty construction or industrial environments.
  • Experience working safely at heights, including on platforms and lifts.
  • Ability to operate and work from scissor lifts in accordance with safety standards.
  • Comfort working on an active construction site and navigating typical site conditions.
  • Strong focus on safety, including consistent use of PPE and adherence to site safety protocols.
  • Ability to read and use measuring tools such as levels, squares, and measuring tapes for accurate layout and assembly.
  • Capability to work effectively in small teams, communicate clearly, and follow instructions.
  • Physical ability to perform manual labour, including lifting, carrying, and working in various positions for extended periods.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience with conveyor systems, mechanical assembly, and similar installation work.
  • Forklift experience is a strong asset; at least one in every three workers must hold a valid forklift license.
  • Experience with aerial work platforms (AWP), including boom or scissor lifts, is highly valued.
  • All workers must be certified on scissor lifts before starting work on site.
  • Exposure to controls or basic understanding of mechanical controls is an asset.
  • Experience in millwright work or welding is beneficial for more complex mechanical tasks.
  • Comfort working extended hours when required to meet project timelines.
  • Ability to bring and use a personal tool set that includes: socket set (7/16" to 3/4"), wrench set (7/16" to 3/4"), screwdriver set, hammer, rubber mallet, 6" torpedo level, square, small pry bar, 10" and 12" adjustable wrenches, imperial measuring tape, allen key set, and drift.

Why Work Here?

This role offers the opportunity to contribute to a major long-term project in a modern distribution facility, with significant overtime potential during peak periods. High performers may be considered for permanent opportunities or transitions to new projects, providing strong prospects for continued employment and career growth. The environment values safety, teamwork, and reliability, giving skilled tradespeople a stable setting to build their experience and advance their careers.

Work Environment

The role is based on a construction-site distribution facility, working primarily Monday to Friday from approximately 07:30 to 15:30, with additional hours or schedule changes as project needs dictate. During peak periods, you may work up to 60 hours per week, typically in patterns such as five 12-hour shifts or six 10-hour shifts, subject to discussion and project requirements. Work frequently takes place on platforms and at heights, including regular use of scissor lifts and, for some team members, forklifts. The environment is heavy-duty and industrial, with active construction activity and moving equipment. Appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) must be worn at all times, and strict adherence to safety procedures is required. Technicians are expected to bring and use their own tools that meet the specified minimum standards, and to maintain them in good working condition.
