Position Summary

The Coach Attendant is responsible for the cleaning and upkeep of municipal transit buses, ensuring a safe, sanitary, and welcoming environment for passengers. This role involves cleaning both the interior and exterior of transit vehicles, performing refueling and fluid checks, and reporting any maintenance concerns. The incumbent plays a vital role in maintaining fleet cleanliness and operational readiness to support efficient transit services.

Coach Attendant Schedules:
This temporary position is governed by the Collective Agreement and includes a 12-hour shift every Sunday (8:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.). Additional hours will be scheduled between Monday and Saturday, with the final schedule structure currently under review and may consist of either one 12-hour shift or two 6-hour shifts.

Current Shift Times:

  • Sunday: 8:30 a.m. – 8:30 p.m.
  • Monday to Saturday (Rotating Shifts):
    • 5:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
    • 3:30 p.m. – 1:30 a.m.

* NOTE: Schedule and hours may change as bus service dictates or operationally required. The Monday-to-Saturday schedule format is currently being finalized.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform daily cleaning and sanitization of the interior and exterior of transit buses, including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, and disinfecting surfaces.
  • Operate cleaning equipment and use cleaning chemicals safely and in accordance with established guidelines.
  • Ensure buses are properly stocked with necessary supplies such as garbage bags, sanitizers and paper products.
  • Conduct visual inspections of vehicles for cleanliness, damage, or maintenance needs, reporting issues to the appropriate department.
  • Assist with minor maintenance tasks such as replenishing windshield washer fluid and diesel exhaust fluid.
  • Ensure compliance with safety standards and proper handling of cleaning chemicals.
  • Maintain cleanliness of the bus depot, wash bays, and other transit facilities as needed.
  • Follow established cleaning schedules and prioritize tasks based on operational requirements.

Position Requirements

Education & Certifications:

  • Ontario Class “D” Driver's License, with a “Z” endorsement.

Experience:

  • Prior experience in commercial or industrial cleaning, preferably in a transit or fleet maintenance environment.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Cleaning Procedures: Knowledge of cleaning techniques, materials, and equipment used in vehicle maintenance.
  • Attention to Detail: Ability to perform thorough cleaning tasks and identify areas needing attention.
  • Time Management: Ability to manage time effectively to complete tasks within scheduled timeframes.
  • Safety Awareness: Understanding of safety protocols related to cleaning chemicals and equipment.
  • Communication: Basic communication skills to report issues and collaborate with team members.
  • Physical Stamina: Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting, bending, and standing for extended periods.

Working Conditions

  • Work is performed primarily in a transit garage environment.
  • Occasional flexibility needed for after-hours incidents.
  • This role involves potential exposure to cleaning agents and vehicle exhaust, and occasional exposure to outdoor or industrial environments.
  • Cognitive demands include prioritizing tasks efficiently and maintaining focus while completing repetitive tasks.
  • Physical demands include lifting, carrying, and moving objects, prolonged standing or walking

  • Successful reference check (two work-related references, with a minimum of one being a direct supervisor)
  • Satisfactory Criminal Record and Judicial Matters Check
  • Satisfactory Driver’s Abstract
  • Proof of certifications
