JOB SUMMARY

Reporting to the Corporate HSE Manager, the position is responsible for the day-to-day implementation and continuous improvement of Health, Safety and Environment programs. The HSE Specialist provides technical and professional support services to operations. This is an on-the-floor (high visibility / floor presence) position.

WHEN YOU JOIN US, YOU WILL BE;

  • Represent the Company on health, safety and environmental subjects by liaising with external stakeholders including : general public, government agencies, insurance carriers, and consultants.
  • Lead, coordinate, and review environmental related approvals such as Environmental Compliance Approvals and Construction / Operating permits.
  • Provide advice and guidance to internal stakeholders such as Engineering Department, Manufacturing staff, and to the Company on health, safety and environmental subjects.
  • Provide technical health & safety advice on a variety of plant issues including but not limited to machine guarding, lockout tagout, hot work, confined space, fall protection, PPE, cranes and lifting devices, forklifts, industrial hygiene, noise, contractor management, fire protection, first aid, emergency response, etc.
  • Review processes, related to health, safety and environmental subjects, and provide continuous improvement opportunities.
  • Responsible for completing annual air emission reports for all North American manufacturing plants.
  • Provide expert interpretation and be proactive in following changes to acts, regulations, policies, guidelines, and other requirements relating to health, safety and environmental subjects.
  • Lead investigations to ensure root causes of environmental, health and safety incidents are identified in all investigations and appropriate and effective corrective actions are implemented on a timely basis to prevent a re-occurrence.
  • Drive results at lower complexity and cost.
  • Experience in coaching and building rapport with plant personnel to solve problems, implement continuous improvement, and follow up on audit action plans, serious incident investigations, incident rates and severity rates
  • Provide guidance and coaching to assist sites to continually improve injury statistics to reach a goal of zero injury
  • Subject matter expert on behaviour based safety programs and systems for the organization.
  • Develop, communicate and maintain corporate HSE standards, policies, rules, procedures and programs
  • OUR IDEAL CANDIDATE;

  • A post-secondary degree in Engineering (preferably in Chemical, Environmental, or Mechanical) or a post-secondary degree in a field related to Health and Safety (preferably in Occupational Safety, Industrial Safety, Industrial Hygiene, or Environmental Health,)
  • Eligible for professional licensing such as a Professional Engineer or CSP / CRSP / CMSE.
  • 5+ years of HSE experience in a continuous improvement manufacturing environment with proven track record of measurable results.
  • Must be able and willing to travel within North America (Approximately 30% of the work is out of the office, with regular travel outside Ontario).
  • Experience in compliance and process auditing.
  • Must have excellent communication skills (oral and written) in the English language.
  • Project management experience from inception, planning to completion
  • Working knowledge of current Canadian (Provincial) and US (States) OHS and environmental laws and standards.
  • Working knowledge workers compensation legislation, Fire Code and CSA and ANSI standards.
  • Experience in HSE management policy and procedure development.
  • Demonstrated initiative and the ability to handle complex assignments with a proactive attitude
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy
  • Organized, above average time management skills
  • Must have strong leadership, conflict and problem resolution skills.
