Job description

Tolko leaders are key to our success. Our leaders are committed to living the Tolko values, developing and engaging their people, and enabling their teams to deliver results. Our Forestry Superintendent - Indigenous Relations works with our neighboring Indigenous Communities to build an innovative and sustainable future for all of us. By participating in meaningful dialogue and engagement and creating successful business relationships they ensure that we all benefit from a healthy and resilient forest ecosystem. If you’re a leader at heart and are experienced in fostering business relationships with Indigenous Communities, we want to hear from you!

We’re looking for a Forestry Superintendent- Indigenous Relations to join our Northwest Regional Woodlands Team in Slave Lake, or High Prairie, Alberta. This position will also support Tolko’s High Level Woodlands operations. Our Northwest Regional Woodlands and High Level Woodlands Teams operate Tolko's forest resources across Alberta, including timber harvesting, silviculture, and forest management and log yard activities. We are dedicated to sustaining these areas to the benefit of all who live and work there.

Our ideal candidate has the following qualifications:

  • Minimum 5-10 years of related experience in a similar role.
  • Familiarity and good understanding of Indigenous cultures and history across Alberta.
  • Strong negotiation and mediation skills.
  • Excellent communication, organization and time management skills.
  • Proven experience with managing Indigenous relationships, preferably in a forestry context.
  • Ability to promote Tolko as a potential employer for Indigenous people.
  • Ability to lead and or participate in meetings with Indigenous partners and communities.
  • University degree or Technical Diploma in Forestry with an understanding of forestry planning and operations.
  • A strong understanding of Alberta forest management practices, government requirements and guidelines related to indigenous consultation and engagement.

In this role you will:

  • Be responsible for the engagement and fostering of relationships with several neighboring Indigenous communities for our Northwest Regional and High Level Woodlands Divisions.
  • Arrange consultation and engagement between Tolko and Indigenous Partners and communities and act as a mediator when necessary.
  • Provide support and guidance to Woodlands staff by advancing Indigenous community engagement, business development, training, and education.
  • Participate in the negotiation and implementation of agreements that contribute to successful and meaningful relationships with Indigenous communities.
  • Play an active role in corporate and other regional Indigenous Relations committees and community events, while acting as a key contact with various First Nation and Metis communities.

So, what’s in it for you?

  • You’ll take on an exciting new challenge with supportive team members.
  • You’ll earn a competitive salary based on your skills and experience. The expected base salary range for this position is $95,250 to $127,000 per year.
  • You’ll earn an additional northern allowance on top of your base pay.
  • You’ll be eligible to participate in Tolko’s bonus program.
  • Competitive benefits and a retirement plan come standard, so you don’t have to choose between your bottom line and your wellbeing or your future.
  • You may also be eligible for relocation support including community connections so you can live (and play) where you work.
  • You’ll be supported in securing the qualification you need to obtain your Registered Professional Forestry certification in Alberta.
  • Opportunities for continued development through on the job and classroom training and reimbursement of tuition and membership fees.
  • A positive, innovative, and inclusive work environment.
