Senior Dementia Companion Position - Midday Weekdays (Private Home) - Start mid September We are seeking a reliable, compassionate, and patient companion to support an independent senior woman living with family in a private home. English speaking. This is primarily a companionship and dementia-support role, focused on maintaining independence, providing social connection, supporting routines, and helping create a calm and positive daily environment. The current companion has been in this role successfully for approximately 1.5 years, and we are looking for someone who can provide continuity and build a trusting relationship. Looking for a mid September start with a two week overlap. Schedule Monday to Friday 10:00 am – 2:00 pm Approximately 20 hours per week Main Responsibilities Companionship and Engagement Provide friendly conversation and social interaction Encourage enjoyable activities based on interests and abilities Support walks, hobbies, puzzles, music, reading, or other activities Help maintain a positive daily routine Coach her to do fall prevention exercises. Dementia-Friendly Support Provide reassurance during moments of confusion or anxiety Use patience and a calm approach when questions are repeated Recognize that correcting or arguing about perceptions may increase distress Use redirection and distraction strategies when appropriate Observe and communicate changes in mood, behaviour, appetite, or routines Light Meal Support Warm prepared meals or assist with simple meal preparation Encourage regular meals and hydration Clean up kitchen area after meals Light Household Support Light tidying related to daily activities Help maintain a comfortable environment No heavy cleaning required Important Qualities The ideal person is: Patient and understanding Warm and compassionate Calm under pressure Reliable and consistent Comfortable working with someone experiencing memory changes Able to communicate clearly with family Experience Preferred Experience supporting seniors Dementia or memory-care experience Personal Support Worker (PSW), Health Care Assistant (HCA), or similar background is an asset References required About the Situation The senior remains independent with activities of daily living. The main support needs are companionship, routine, reassurance, and dementia-friendly interaction. Occasionally, she may misinterpret things she sees or hears (for example, activity outside the home) and become convinced something has happened. The successful candidate should be comfortable responding with reassurance, emotional support, and redirection rather than confrontation.
