Job description

We're supporting our client, Denea Group Inc., in their search for an Intermediate Electrical Engineer to join their growing team!

Intermediate Electrical Engineer

Hybrid Role

Reports to: Senior Electrical Engineer

About Denea Group Inc.

Denea is an engineering company serving the food manufacturing sector. We provide project engineering and management services to leading multinational food companies, with a focus on delivering practical, high-quality solutions that meet the needs of our clients.

The company builds on more than 50 years of combined experience in engineering and construction. Dena was formed following the founders’ success in building a similar business over 20 years ago, which was later acquired by a larger publicly traded corporation.

Denea's foundation is built on deep industry experience, strong client relationships, and the values that have guided our team from the beginning: quality, integrity, commitment, and efficiency.

Our team is actively recruiting associates who share our values of integrity, loyalty, and trust. Our dynamic approach to project engineering provides excellent opportunities for enthusiastic professionals who want to contribute to meaningful projects and be part of Denea’s continued growth.

About the Role

This role is based in Mississauga, Ontario. Denea has adopted a hybrid work model, with associates expected to work from the office a minimum of three days per week, with flexibility to work remotely on other days.

Reporting to the Senior Electrical Engineer, this opportunity offers mentorship in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment. The successful candidate will gain exposure to key design principles, contribute to internal design processes, and work in a client-facing setting that supports accelerated growth and development.

On-site fieldwork will be required on an as-needed basis.

Responsibilities

Project Engineering and Design Support

  • Support Project Engineers with major project initiatives, including identifying equipment capabilities, utility requirements, and infrastructure needs.
  • Assist with the design of Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs) and Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs).
  • Prepare and update electrical system designs using AutoCAD.
  • Assist with the design of lighting, power, fire alarm, security, single-line diagrams, and network diagrams.
  • Create motor and instrument lists, conduit and cable tray layouts, and related design documentation.
  • Prepare design calculations, including voltage drop, lighting levels, cable tray fill, and heat tracing.
  • Coordinate drawing packages for issue and prepare electronic issue folders.

Technical Standards and Documentation

  • Execute work in accordance with accepted engineering guidelines, industry standards, government regulations, and applicable codes, including NEC, NFPA, IEEE, IEC, CSA, and other relevant standards.
  • Generate, review, and take responsibility for contract documents and specifications, particularly as they relate to process electrical requirements.
  • Prepare bid documents for electrical and controls panel design and installation.
  • Prepare technical evaluations of equipment supplier proposals and procurement packages.
  • Write work plans, technical reports, and project documentation in a clear, concise, and technically accurate manner.

Project Coordination and Collaboration

  • Work closely with architectural and mechanical disciplines to optimize piping, conduit, cable tray, and cable routing.
  • Liaise with client process engineers on design issues and incorporate client requirements in a cost-effective and low-risk manner.
  • Participate in design reviews and manage the resolution of action items.
  • Work effectively with Project Engineers, designers, discipline leads, managers, contractors, vendors, and third-party engineering partners.
  • Direct internal resources and third-party engineering partners as required to support project deliverables.

Construction, Commissioning, and Start-Up Support

  • Conduct acceptance testing and support equipment commissioning.
  • Manage contractors and equipment vendors to ensure compliance with project specifications, safety regulations, applicable codes, and client requirements.
  • Support site start-up teams by troubleshooting and resolving issues with vendor equipment technicians during installation and start-up.
  • Assist with the development of engineering check-out, equipment acceptance testing, start-up, and validation documents.
  • Self-manage workload and priorities to achieve project deliverables.
  • Demonstrate strong technical judgment, attention to detail, and the ability to work in a fast-paced, client-facing project environment.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
  • Professional Engineer designation, or equivalent, is preferred.
  • 4–7 years of experience with electrical systems, including process equipment and power distribution.
  • Experience designing lighting, fire alarm, and low-voltage systems for building spaces, including lighting calculations and coordination of fixture placement with trades.
  • Familiarity with ISO symbols and device tag names for instruments and devices, including temperature, pressure, level and flow elements, switches, transmitters, motors, fuses, breakers, transformers, and solenoid valves.
  • Knowledge of CFIA, FDA, and clean design requirements for food equipment is considered an asset.
  • Ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with multiple departments, disciplines, and senior-level stakeholders.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to prepare high-quality communications, reports, proposals, and technical documentation.
  • Strong time management, organizational, and prioritization skills.
  • Ability to partner with and lead people with different working styles and personalities.
  • Adaptive, confident, persuasive, proactive, accountable, and enthusiastic.
  • Valid passport required, as travel may be required to support clients across North America.

Software Applications and Technical Knowledge

  • Advanced skills using Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, Microsoft Project, and AutoCAD.
