Work at CBC/Radio-Canada

At CBC/Radio-Canada, we create content that informs, entertains and connects Canadians on multiple platforms. Our successes and accomplishments are driven by embodying and upholding values, which include creativity, integrity, inclusiveness and relevance.

Do you think you have the ability and drive to keep up with this exciting, ever-changing industry? Whether it be in front of the camera, on air, online or behind the scenes, you would be joining a team that thrives on making connections and telling stories that are important to Canadians.

Behind the scenes, but ahead of the curve: help us develop the next-generation public service media organization.

Technology & Infrastructure (T&I) is the backbone and the future-forward arm of CBC/Radio-Canada. Our purpose is to constantly innovate to evolve and maintain the Corporation’s technology and infrastructure. We are the people that make stuff work. We make connections between media content, systems, people and places. We are the space in between.

A place with purpose. CBC/Radio-Canada has always been a highly regarded pioneer of media technology — not just in Canada but around the world. Today, we are transforming ourselves into a modern and agile public service media organization. Technology is the driving force, and we are the team making it happen.

This is a hybrid role with a mix of in-office and remote work. Work arrangements will be discussed with hiring managers per departmental guidelines.

The Opportunity

CBC/Radio-Canada operates one of the world’s leading technology infrastructures and one of the largest private networks, which distributes its content and services exclusively across the country. CBC/Radio-Canada is looking for a hands‑on, detail design oriented Engineering Project Lead to join our Engineering team, to both lead and take part in projects focused on deploying technology. This is a full time permanent position, and the successful incumbent would be based in Toronto, working primarily on local projects, with eventual and occasional travel to various other sites nationally.

What’s in it for you?

Challenges. We spend our days solving problems on an unbelievable scale. Media systems workflows are highly specialized and complicated; updating, installing and supporting technologies that are organization‑wide and that impact broadcasting content is a time-sensitive, complex technical feat. And that’s just the beginning.

You will be our IT subject matter specialist for projects. You will mainly work on improving and deploying our infrastructure for data management, cloud-based data and applications and containerization. You will also participate in infrastructure automation projects, complemented with security and resilience activities for the infrastructure.

Additionally, you will manage project deliverables and activities, from proposal and procurement to design, implementation, testing and handover, in accordance with CBC/Radio-Canada and industry standards as well as current federal and provincial regulations.

Perks You Can Look Forward To

  • Four weeks of vacation per year.
  • Work from home opportunities.
  • Competitive total rewards package.
  • Opportunities to work with cutting edge technology.
  • Opportunities for continued learning and professional development - including access to e-learning services, customized courses and certification opportunities.
  • Opportunities to become a member of our Employee Resource Groups.
  • A creative and dynamic work environment, where your ideas and contributions can be heard, valued and respected.
  • A supportive management team committed to upholding the highest standards of diversity and inclusivity.

As Our New Engineering Project Lead You Will

  • Create concept designs for review with our business partners.
  • Design in detail, innovative, practical solutions to complex problems.
  • Regularly meet with stakeholders to determine requirements and solutions.
  • Create and track the schedules and budgets; monitoring progress.
  • Prepare schematic, layout drawings and installation instructions.
  • Oversee the procurement from writing proposals to evaluating tender responses.
  • Responsible for the implementation phase.
  • Verify system performance and ensure that identified deficiencies are rectified
  • Prepare documentation for ongoing operation and maintenance of facilities.

What You Bring

  • Minimum of 5 years experience in design and implementation of various IT infrastructure.
  • Knowledge : platforms for virtualization, containers, storage and cloud, basic scripting.
  • Hands on experience : large-scale system design and deployment of critical IT infrastructure and security systems, installation and configuration of servers and virtual machines.
  • Hands on experience : tools for infrastructure as code (IaC) like Terraform, CloudFormation or Ansible - an asset.
  • Hands on experience : Installation of OpenShift and Advanced Cluster Manager On Premise.
  • Hands on experience : Installation and configuration of Kubernetes distribution.
  • Basic knowledge : principles and best practices for infrastructure security - an asset.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Applied Science or Engineering, or a Diploma In Applied Science and Technology.
  • Experience in Project Management is preferred, specifically with the Agile approach.
  • Membership, or eligibility to become a member, of the provincial Engineering Association (PEO, OIQ, … etc) is mandatory.
  • Strong and influential verbal and written communication skills in English and French considered a strong asset.
  • Strong analytical skills, with an innate ability to think through complex issues and design innovative solutions, as well as digging further into issues, removing roadblocks and presenting solutions for immediate and long term.
  • Ability to build and maintain strong relationships with peers, partners, clients, management, and external vendors, in addition to being able to effectively translate technical requirements to non technical business needs.
  • Ability to work efficiently on a number of projects at different stages with multiple priorities, never losing sight of the details.
  • Ability to adapt to new tools and technologies quickly, all while staying up to date with industry best practices.
  • Ability to travel to different CBC locations to oversee different phases of projects.
