Job Description / Duties


Main Responsibilities



  • Perform general pediatric surgical procedures, including neonatal surgery.

  • Participate in the division’s general clinical activities: consultations, postoperative follow‑up, outpatient clinic evaluations, and participation in the surgeon‑of‑the‑week (SOW) care model.

  • Perform subspecialized procedures, including liver and kidney transplantation and complex hepatobiliary surgeries.

  • Participate in specialized transplantation activities: pre‑transplant evaluations and postoperative inpatient care.

  • Collaborate closely with gastroenterology, hepatology, nephrology, anesthesia, intensive care, and other specialty teams.

  • Contribute to teaching residents, fellows, and medical students.

  • Participate in clinical or basic research activities according to the candidate’s interests and division needs.

  • Participate to both general pediatric surgery and transplantation (liver and kidney) call schedules.


Required Qualifications



  • Medical degree and certified training in pediatric surgery.

  • Recognized subspecialty training in liver transplantation from a center with a high volume of pediatric liver transplantation (including reduced‑size grafts, split liver transplantation, living donor transplantation, and whole liver grafts) (American Society of Transplant Surgeons (ASTS) fellowship certification).

  • A candidate interested in this position but not yet holding the complementary transplantation training at the time of application, but who commits to completing a 2 year fellowship in a recognized North American transplant center, may be considered.

  • Eligibility for a medical license from the Collège des médecins du Québec (CMQ).

  • Experience in an academic environment or strong interest in teaching and research.

  • Excellent communication skills, interdisciplinary collaboration, and decision‑making abilities in complex contexts.

  • French working proficiency or commitment to learning French rapidly.

The Division of Pediatric and Thoracic Surgery at CHU Sainte‑Justine, affiliated with the Université de Montréal, is seeking a board certified or board eligible pediatric general surgeon with specialized training in transplantation (liver and kidney). The Division of Pediatric Surgery practices within the CHU Sainte‑Justine in Montréal.


About CHU Sainte‑Justine


CHU Sainte-Justine is the largest mother-and-child centre in Canada and the second largest in North America. A free‑standing hospital dedicated to children and mothers, it has 420 beds and offers a unique multidisciplinary environment entirely focused on pediatric, maternal, and fetal health.


Renowned for its clinical excellence, cutting‑edge research, and commitment to innovation, CHU Sainte‑Justine is also a major university training centre. Its pediatric surgery training program has been in place since 1957 and includes three fellowship positions at all times.


CHU Sainte‑Justine is one of only three centres in Canada performing pediatric liver transplantation and the only one in the province of Québec. It is also one of two centres performing pediatric kidney transplantation in Québec. The program performs approximately 8 to 10 pediatric liver transplants per year.


About The Division Of Pediatric Surgery


The Division of Pediatric Surgery includes eight pediatric surgeons, three clinical fellows, and three nurse practitioners. All division members have specialized training in general and thoracic pediatric surgery, including neonatal surgery, trauma care, and pediatric tumors. Laparoscopic and thoracoscopic techniques are actively used in pediatric surgery.


To Practice At The CHU Sainte‑Justine, All Surgeons In The Division Also Require Additional Subspecialty Training Completed Generally After Their Pediatric General Surgery Fellowship. Represented Specialties Include



  • Pediatric colorectal surgery — Management of congenital and acquired colorectal conditions

  • Pediatric oncologic surgery — Surgical care of childhood solid tumors

  • Pediatric hepatobiliary surgery and transplantation — Complex liver and biliary procedures, including transplantation

  • Fetal surgery — In utero interventions for congenital anomalies as well as EXIT procedures

  • Pediatric trauma surgery — Acute care for injured children


The division also performs complex hepatobiliary surgical options, including congenital portosystemic shunt ligation, portal hypertension surgery (Meso‑Rex bypass and portosystemic shunts), and complex hepatic resections with vascular reconstruction, among others.

Compensation according to Québec salary scales and RAMQ agreements.
