Job description

Reports To: Board of Directors

Position Summary

The Managing Director is the senior leader responsible for overall organizational performance, including strategic execution, operations, financial management, project delivery, and stakeholder relations. The role bridges Board of Director’s (Board) direction with day-to-day operations, ensuring organizational effectiveness, growth, and compliance while advancing BCCF’s conservation mandate.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Strategic Leadership & Planning
  • Implement Board-approved strategic direction and organizational priorities
  • Develop and execute annual business and operational plans
  • Identify growth opportunities, partnerships, and funding sources
  • Translate strategy into actionable operational programs and performance metrics
  • Advise the Board on risks, opportunities, and organizational performance

2. Operations & Organizational Management

  • Direct all day-to-day operations and cross-functional activities
  • Ensure efficient workflows, resource allocation, and process optimization
  • Coordinate activities across regional offices, project teams, and departments
  • Develop and enforce policies to improve productivity and operational consistency
  • Oversee reporting systems, analytics, and continuous improvement processes
  • Lead continuous improvement and organizational effectiveness initiatives by establishing performance metrics and monitoring organizational outcomes
  • Track progress against strategic and operational goals

3. Financial Oversight

  • Working closely alongside the finance team to lead budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning processes
  • Monitor expenditures, cash flow, grants, and collaborate with senior staff on reviews and development of contracts, and project budgets
  • Ensure strong financial controls and regulatory compliance
  • Identify cost efficiencies and revenue diversification opportunities
  • Provide regular financial reports and recommendations to the Board
  • Support revenue diversification and long-term financial sustainability.

4. Conservation Projects & Program Oversight

  • Oversee delivery of conservation and environmental programs and projects
  • Ensure projects meet scope, budget, schedule, and reporting requirements
  • Maintain high standards of scientific, technical, and operational integrity
  • Leverage project management systems to optimize delivery performance

5. People Leadership & Organizational Development

  • Supervise and evaluate senior staff as well assist with development of multidisciplinary teams
  • Drive staff development, succession planning, and retention strategies
  • Foster a collaborative, accountable, and high-performing workplace culture
  • Oversee annual work plans, performance reviews, and training initiatives

6. Stakeholder, Government & Community Relations

  • Build and maintain relationships with Indigenous Nations, governments, funders, and partners
  • Represent BCCF in public forums, events, and stakeholder engagements
  • Support fundraising, sponsorship, and partnership development initiatives
  • Manage external collaborations and ensure alignment with organizational goals

7. Governance & Board Support

  • Support the Board in governance, planning, and decision-making
  • Prepare reports, analysis, and recommendations
  • Ensure alignment between Board’s direction and operational execution
  • Provide data-driven insights to support Board decision-making
  • Maintain transparent communication on organizational performance and risks

8. Risk Management & Compliance

  • Identify and mitigate operational, financial, and regulatory risks
  • Ensure compliance with nonprofit, legal, employment, and safety requirements
  • Establish policies, internal controls, and incident management processes
  • Maintain organizational integrity and operational continuity

Qualifications

  • Degree in environmental science, business/public administration, or related field
  • 10+ years of senior leadership experience in operations, nonprofit management, or project delivery
  • Strong financial, contract, and resource management expertise
  • Experience working with Boards, government agencies, Indigenous communities, and/or funders
  • Proven ability to lead complex, multi-project organizations

  • Full-time position in Surrey office; remote work requires Board approval
  • Requires travel and occasional evening/weekend commitments

$100,000 - $125,000 depending on skills and experience

Hours:

full time (37.5 hours/week)

Term:

Permanent position with a 6-month probationary period
