The Senior Human Rights Lead provides confidential, strategic advice, guidance, consultation, and support regarding human rights, workplace harassment, accommodation, and related workplace concerns. This role promotes early complaint resolution through consultation, mediation, restorative approaches, education, and policy development, while advancing a culture of human rights, equity, inclusion, and belonging across Lakeridge Health.

The incumbent candidate provides organizational leadership in the development and implementation of human rights standardized process, programs, policies, and education. The Senior Human Rights Lead does not conduct formal workplace investigations but provides human rights expertise, supports informal resolution processes, and identifies opportunities to address systemic barriers and improve organizational practices.

Job Duties

  • Consult with employee, credential staff, patients and other stakeholders on human rights inquiries in accordance with Lakeridge Health Human Right policies and other applicable policies and legislative requirements.
  • Lead and support mediation, restorative processes and other informal conflict resolution using a trauma-informed, culturally responsive, and human rights-based approach to promote early and meaningful resolution. Provide interpretation, advice, and guidance to Lakeridge Health team members and stakeholders towards the resolution of workplace harassment, accommodation, and other human rights-related concerns.
  • Liaise with unions, associations, People and Culture, Patient Care, Medical Affairs and Workplace Investigations and other stakeholders to coordinate appropriate responses to human rights concerns and support the implementation of informal resolution strategies.
  • Prepare reports, recommendations, and summaries related to consultations, informal resolution processes, systemic issues, and organizational recommendations in collaboration with People and Culture, Workplace Investigations, Medical Affairs, and Patient-Centred Care.
  • Contribute, develop and implement the design and delivery of educational programs, customized training, workshops, and presentations to promote Lakeridge Health's Respectful Workplace Standard, Human Rights Policy, and other related organizational policies and legislative requirements. Provide leadership in advancing human rights in program, service development and implementation.
  • Support the development, implementation, and review of workplace related policies, procedures, and protocols to ensure compliance with human rights requirement under applicable legislations and organizational commitments.
  • Provide consultation and guidance regarding the duty to accommodate in accordance with Ontario Human rights Code and applicable policies.
  • Conduct research and analysis to ensure human rights concerns are addressed consistently, impartially, promptly, and fairly.
  • Monitor resolution outcomes to ensure recommendations are implemented and followed through. Collect, analyze and maintain data on human rights inquiries and concerns, identify systemic trends, barriers and recommend strategies to address and improve organizational practices and promote equity.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Requirements

  • University degree in a related field, such as Human Rights/Equity, Social Sciences, Public Administration, or Law, with four years of progressively human rights experience in a large unionized public-sector environment, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Training and demonstrated experience supporting the resolution of harassment and discrimination matters
  • Demonstrated experience conducting mediation, alternative dispute resolution, restorative practices, and other informal conflict resolution processes.
  • Knowledge of progressive human rights and workplace harassment prevention practices, related legislation and case law, including the Ontario Human Rights Code, Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act, Employment Standards Act, Workplace Safety and Insurance Act, Freedom of Information legislation, and human resources practices.
  • Proven ability to promote equitable practices that value inclusion and diversity.
  • Demonstrated understanding of issues affecting marginalized groups and experience working with diverse communities in an anti-oppressive, anti-racist, culturally relevant, and responsive manner.
  • Demonstrated experience managing sensitive and confidential information and handling contentious issues with sensitivity, sound judgment, and discretion.
  • Demonstrated ability to build rapport with diverse stakeholders.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including the ability to prepare concise settlement agreements and comprehensive reports, summarize resolution outcomes, lead mediations, facilitate training, and communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Highly developed analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Proven ability to work under pressure and meet frequent deadlines.
  • Proficiency with word processing, databases, presentation software, case management software, email, and internet tools.
  • Ability to travel regularly across Lakeridge Health sites.
