Senior Test Specialist, Mechanical or Electrical (Permanent)

Halifax, NS

Expected Salary: $80,458 to $98,337

To determine final salary, Babcock considers a variety of factors including the successful Candidate’s skills and experience and internal equity. The final base salary offer is at the Company’s sole discretion and presented as part of a competitive total compensation package.

Description

In this role, you will:

  • Carry out testing, acceptance, and maintenance of Victoria Class Submarine (VCS) systems and equipment.
  • Act as Test Director, coordinating multi-disciplinary teams in the execution of complex submarine testing activities
  • Diagnose faults, troubleshoot issues, and perform corrective maintenance to ensure system readiness and reliability.
  • Provide technical leadership and oversight to Test Specialists executing test procedures.
  • Resolve complex technical issues, clearly communicating risks, solutions, and impacts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Lead small- to medium-sized teams and collaborate effectively within a broader technical organization to deliver program objectives.
  • Provide mentorship or guidance for other Test Specialists.
  • Record defects using Babcock Canada IT and/or Government controlled systems.
  • Support Commissioning Managers and Field Service Lead in a dynamic shipyard waterfront environment, responding to evolving program needs
  • Draft, review, and maintain test documentation and work instructions to support commissioning, maintenance, and production activities.
  • Draft and review lockout/tagout (LOTO) documentation to ensure systems are safely isolated for commissioning activities, production repairs, and other operational requirements.
  • Coordinate and assist in the application of lockout/tagout procedures, working with cross-functional representatives including external contractors and internal departments as required.
  • Utilize and develop proficiency in company-specific software systems (SAP and/or IFS) to support daily operational, maintenance, and documentation activities.
  • Other duties as required.

The ideal candidate brings:

  • Strong technical skills including post-secondary education; degree, diploma and/or certificate in electrical engineering technology or mechanical/electrical engineering or equivalent experience.
  • Eligible for recognition as AScT, CET, EIT, or P. Eng. designation, as applicable, in British Columbia and/or Nova Scotia.
  • 8+ years of related technical experience
  • Experience in marine, naval, submarine, or offshore oil and gas operations considered an asset.
  • Hands‑on experience operating, testing, or commissioning mechanical systems is an asset
  • Ability to work safely in physically demanding environments, including climbing ladders, working at heights, and operating around water.
  • Capable of standing or walking for extended periods and working effectively in confined or restricted spaces.
  • Demonstrated physical dexterity to perform tasks in tight, complex work environments.
  • Comfortable working in an industrial environment around moving equipment (e.g., forklifts, cranes).
  • Preferred working knowledge in a variety of:
    • Mechanical related technologies
      • Hydraulic systems
      • Pneumatic systems
      • Internal Combustion Engines, Diesel, super/turbochargers
      • Mechanical linkages, alignment, rotating machinery
      • Pumps, valves, actuators, motors
    • Electrical systems and electronics related technologies
      • Alternating Current systems and power distribution control systems.
      • Direct Current control systems
      • Fibre optic applications.
      • Knowledge of uninterrupted power supplies and switching.
  • Strong communication skills; written, verbal and interpersonal.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and general computer applications.
  • Eligible to obtain and maintain Canadian Secret Security Clearance and ITAR clearance.
