Overview

WHO YOU ARE AT PANASONIC CANADA:

Panasonic Canada Inc. is currently looking to hire for the position of Lead Counsel – Canada.

Provides leadership and oversight for legal support across Panasonic's Canadian operations, including Panasonic Canada Inc. (PCI), Panasonic Eco Solutions Canada Inc. (PESCA), (ISD), and other Canadian operations as assigned (the "Company"). Leads and coordinates legal support for the Company and provides strategic, business-oriented legal advice and assistance across a broad range of legal matters, including commercial transactions, corporate governance, employment, compliance, privacy, regulatory, and dispute-related matters, while ensuring alignment with applicable laws, regulations, business objectives, and Panasonic policies.

This is a full-time position.

This position is hybrid. Any office-based work will be performed from our Mississauga office at Ambler Drive.

Responsibilities

WHAT YOU’LL DO:

  • Provide strategic legal advice and guidance to business leaders and stakeholders on a wide range of legal, regulatory, operational, and employment matters.
  • Support the evaluation of business opportunities, strategic initiatives, and operational decisions by identifying legal risks and practical solutions.
  • Draft, review, negotiate, and interpret commercial agreements, procurement contracts, government contracts, and other legal documents.
  • Communicate legal requirements, risks, and business implications in a clear, practical, and business-oriented manner.
  • Develop innovative solutions to complex commercial, contractual, regulatory, employment, and operational issues while balancing legal and business objectives.
  • Monitor legislative, regulatory, and case law developments and advise management on emerging legal and compliance risks.
  • Identify, assess, and help manage legal, regulatory, compliance, and business risks impacting Canadian operations.
  • Partner with Panasonic North America Legal and Compliance teams to support compliance programs, investigations, training initiatives, and policy development.
  • Provide guidance on compliance matters, including competition law, anti-corruption, privacy, anti-spam, product safety, customs and trade, and labor and employment requirements.
  • Support corporate governance activities, including board and committee matters, governance documentation, corporate records, resolutions, and regulatory filings.
  • Participate in leadership, governance, compliance, privacy, product safety, and other organizational committees and initiatives.
  • Prepare and support legal and compliance reporting requirements for Panasonic North America, Panasonic Holdings, and affiliated entities.
  • Lead or support litigation, investigations, pre-litigation matters, dispute resolution activities, and the engagement and management of external counsel.
  • Build and maintain effective relationships with business leaders, government agencies, regulators, external advisors, and other key stakeholders to advance the Company's interests.
  • Provide leadership, coaching, and development support to legal team members, while contributing to recruitment, performance management, employee development, and other organizational initiatives.

Qualifications

MUST-HAVES:

  • B. (or equivalent law degree) and membership in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario as a Barrister and Solicitor.
  • 10+ years of progressive legal experience with significant corporate/commercial law and compliance expertise.
  • Strong knowledge of commercial transactions, corporate governance, regulatory compliance, and employment-related matters.
  • Proven ability to provide strategic, business-oriented legal advice to senior leaders and stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated experience identifying, assessing, and mitigating legal and business risks.
  • Excellent analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills, including the ability to conduct complex legal analysis.
  • Experience developing practical and customized solutions that balance legal risk with business objectives.
  • Strong influencing and negotiation skills, with the ability to build consensus across diverse stakeholder groups.
  • Exceptional interpersonal, communication, and relationship-management skills, including the ability to communicate complex legal concepts effectively.
  • Ability to thrive in a dynamic environment while managing multiple priorities and supporting cross-functional business initiatives.
