About You / What We Are Looking For

We are currently recruiting for an Environmental Services Projects Specialist to join the Environment team in our Engineering and Public Works Department.

Working as part of the Environment team, the successful incumbent will perform professional environmental work related to the review and analysis of development applications to ensure compliance with environmental legislation; the issuance of related permits, and site inspections to verify compliance.

This work entails researching environmental considerations related to land use and development; coordinating the review and approval of applications through regulatory agencies; preparing and reviewing technical reports; developing draft environmental regulations; and maintaining effective working relationships with internal staff, environmental organizations, regulatory agencies and other stakeholders. Work also includes planning and conducting water quality sampling and reviewing and interpreting laboratory data.

Minimum Qualifications

Among the required skills and knowledge needed are sound knowledge of standard research methods and techniques and current trends and developments in environmental land development. You will have considerable knowledge of the legislation, policies, regulations, bylaws and objectives governing environmental land use (e.g. Riparian Areas Protection Regulations, Migratory Birds Regulations) and the ability to apply this knowledge in your day to day work through the preparation of reports and recommendations on environmental aspects of land use and development projects, programs and policies. You will exercise sound, consistent judgement and problem solving, referring more complex problems and policy matters to a superior who reviews work in terms of professional services rendered. You will have the ability to perform environmental planning, research and analytical tasks, and to communicate effectively in oral and written form. You will also have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, environmental groups, internal and external contacts and authorities.

A BC Driver’s License is required.

Preferred Qualifications

·A degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Planning, Environmental Engineering or other related degree.

·Considerable related experience preferably in a resource or environmental management planning setting.

·Eligibility for registration in a related professional association (e.g. Association of Professional Biologists of B.C.)

·A background in Planning and recent municipal experience are considered assets.

What We Offer:

This CUPE position has an hourly rate range of $51.87 - $61.29. The rate of pay is based on a variety of factors including qualifications, knowledge, experience and skills.

Additionally, there is an opportunity to participate in an earned day off program. This position is based in Coquitlam with some flexible, hybrid work options available.
