The Council of the Haida Nation (CHN) is responsible for the stewardship of lands, waters and people. Working with CHN means being part of a team that values collaboration, cultural knowledge, and meaningful contributions to the well-being of the Haida.

About The Role

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director of Communications is a senior leadership position responsible for the strategic direction, oversight, and delivery of communication programs and services that support the goals and priorities of the Council of the Haida Nation, both internally and externally. In addition to communications, the Director of Communications is responsible for culture and language, research and film applications, media enquires, tourism, wellbeing, and education.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

Duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Share the Nations efforts to implement the Haida Title Recognition Agreements, including processes for transitioning lands under Haida jurisdiction.
  • Lead and manage the Nations communication initiatives related to culture and language, tourism, education and wellbeing.
  • Ensure clear communication and collaboration between CHN teams, committees, Haida citizens and external partners.
  • Supervise staff to ensure effective delivery of Haida Laas, work plans and reporting.
  • Monitor and report on milestones, risks, and progress related to CHN and Haida citizens.
  • Provide strategic advice to Council and senior leadersip on communications coming from Haida citizens, Island residents, neighbouring nations, and the world.
  • Ensure that communication efforts are community-informed and aligned with the Haida vision and sovereignty.
  • Maintain transparency by supporting clear and accessible communication of CHN's decisions, policies, and processes.
  • Develop engagement tools and strategies to inform and engage citizens meaningfully.
  • Foster a team culture of respect, accountability, and commitment to the Nation's vision.

Qualifications & Skills

  • Knowledge and understanding of Haida Governance, laws and cultural values;
  • Excellent and proven communication skills, with at least five years’ experience in a Communications and related field;
  • Significant experience in project and financial management, with a proven track record of meeting deadlines and budgets and reporting compliance;
  • Significant experience in effective management of personnel, including mentorship, leadership, hiring, firing and establishing and maintaining a respectful workplace;
  • Knowledge of Haida values and issues, including issues, challenges and opportunities;
  • Excellent computer skills, including Adobe, Canva and Microsoft Office;
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills;
  • Demonstrated strategic capacity adaptability, creativity, innovation and team building;
  • At least 5 years’ experience managing in Communications/Culture or Haida language with demonstrated success in developing and implementing strategic direction and project management;
  • Must have a valid B.C. driver’s license.
  • Pursuant to section 41 of the British Columbia Human Rights Code, preference will be given to qualified Haida applicants.

What We Offer

  • Salary Range: $57.91 - $64.98 per hour based on experience.
  • Full-time (35-40 hrs/week) with paid time off, including an additional 2 week office closure during the winter break.
