Job description

Experience Aviva

Individually we are people, but together we are Aviva. Individually these are just words, but together they are our Values – Care, Commitment, Community, and Confidence.

At Aviva Canada, we put people first, our employees, our customers, and our communities. We're proud of a culture built on care, inclusion, and collaboration, where your voice matters and your growth is supported. We're not just about insurance; we're about making a real difference by protecting what matters most.

The Opportunity

Our Verify, Fraud & Financial Crime team is seeking a Road Investigator – Property Claims Investigations who is passionate about uncovering the truth and protecting our customers. As a key escalation point for suspicious and complex property claims, policies, and suppliers, you will conduct both field and desk-based investigations to determine the legitimacy of losses and identify potential fraud.

This role will focus on residential, commercial, farm, and specialty property claims, requiring a strong understanding of property insurance, claims handling, loss causation, and investigative practices. You will collaborate with Claims, Underwriting, Legal, Engineering, and external partners to support effective fraud detection and risk mitigation efforts.

This position requires regular travel throughout Western Ontario and occasional travel elsewhere, including some evening and weekend work.

Come join our team!

What You'll Do

  • Act as Case Lead for both field and desk-based property investigations.

  • Conduct site inspections, scene examinations, in-person and telephone interviews, and gather and analyze facts to support investigative findings.

  • Establish investigation strategies, define scope, and identify all relevant leads and evidentiary requirements.

  • Collect, preserve, and document physical and electronic evidence in a legally defensible manner.

  • Analyze claim documentation, estimates, invoices, financial records, contractor documentation, occupancy information, and other supporting evidence.

  • Assist desk investigators with fieldwork assignments and Examinations Under Oath (EUO) as required.

  • Determine when investigations are ready for disposition and provide clear, evidence-based recommendations.

  • Prepare for and participate in Decision Panel meetings.

  • Build defendable case briefs to support internal business decisions, civil recovery efforts, or potential criminal prosecution.

  • Liaise with colleagues across Verify, Claims, Underwriting, Legal, Engineering, and external industry partners.

  • Evaluate evidence sufficiency throughout the investigation lifecycle.

  • Supervise investigations conducted by external vendors and service providers.

  • Manage complex investigations involving multiple parties, service providers, subject matter experts, and investigators.

  • Identify fraud indicators involving fire, water, theft, vandalism, contractor inflation, occupancy concerns, cause-and-origin issues, and organized fraud activity.

  • Provide technical expertise, coaching, and mentoring to other investigators.

  • Attend court as required and prepare Aviva witnesses for testimony.

  • Ensure investigations are timely, thorough, and compliant with legal and regulatory standards.

What You'll Bring

  • Minimum of 5 years of combined experience in investigations and large loss claims adjusting, with demonstrated expertise in complex claim assessment and analysis.

  • Strong technical knowledge of P&C insurance lines of business, specifically Property Claims.

  • Experience handling, investigating, or adjusting residential and commercial property losses.

  • Knowledge of property claims processes, construction practices, restoration services, building systems, or forensic investigations.

  • Valid driver's license.

  • Provincial or territorial insurance licensing (as required).

  • Post-secondary education or equivalent work experience.

  • CIP designation or working toward completion.

  • Solid understanding of claims and underwriting processes.

  • Excellent analytical, investigative, and decision-making skills.

  • Strong communication, presentation, and customer service skills—diplomatic and empathetic.

  • Ability to make confident, objective decisions in high-risk or legally sensitive matters.

  • Comfortable working in ambiguous or challenging situations.

  • Willingness to travel across Canada and work evenings/weekends as needed.

  • Experience conducting field investigations, witness interviews, statement analysis, and evidence collection.

  • Bilingualism (English & French) is an asset.

Preferred Experience

  • Senior Property Claims Adjuster.

  • SIU Property Investigator.

  • Property Restoration or Remediation Specialist.

  • Fire Investigation or Cause & Origin Investigation.

  • Forensic Engineering or Building Science background.

  • Construction, Restoration, or Property Risk Management experience.

  • Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE) designation or equivalent investigative accreditation.

What You'll Get

  • The salary range for this position is from $75,000 to $100,000. Please note that individual salary is determined by factors such as job-related knowledge, skills and experience, as well as internal equity.

  • Compelling rewards package including base compensation, eligibility for annual bonus, retirement savings, share plan, health benefits, personal wellness, and volunteer opportunities.

  • Outstanding career development opportunities.

  • We'll support your professional development education.

  • Competitive vacation package with the option to purchase 5 extra days off per year.

  • Employee-driven programs focused on gender, LGBTQ+, origins, diversity, and inclusion.

  • Corporate wellness programs to support our employees' physical and mental health.
