Job description

Position Summary

The Assistant Lab Co-ordinator is responsible for assisting the Lab Coordinator in order to ensure that the Health Studies Laboratories operate efficiently and effectively. They are accountable for lab-based instruction to support the Health Studies program and ensure that they contribute to the educational goals of the Faculty of Human & Social Sciences. The Assistant Lab Co-ordinator is responsible for the delivery, development, evaluation, and revision of lab exercises, in accordance with the directions of the Lab Coordinator. The Assistant Lab Co-ordinator acts as a resource for students in the assigned Community Health courses. Laboratory content is the primary responsibility of the Laboratory Coordinators, but s/he will have full responsibility for her/his assigned laboratory sessions.

The Assistant Lab Co-ordinator will report to the Senior Administrative Office, FHSS and the Course Instructor with day-to-day direction provided by the Lab Coordinator.

This position has a university-wide mandate and is based at the Brantford Campus. The incumbent provides subject matter expertise to all campuses, requiring regular interpersonal interactions and collaboration with departments at the Waterloo Campus, the Brantford Campus, and external partners. Special attention is given to ensure equitable service delivery across all locations.

Accountabilities

Laboratory Safety

  • Ensures students are following laboratory safety standards, including: Tracking and ensuring completion of student WHMIS training; Reviewing the appropriate personal protective equipment and attire in the lab (i.e. wearing lab coats, closed-toed shoes, eye protection and gloves); and Identifying and reporting any issues to the Lab Co-ordinator on a weekly basis.

Lab Content

  • Assists Lab Coordinator and Course Instructor in design and preparation lab content to support Community Health courses, including: establish marking criteria/rubrics for lab exercises, including model solutions and marking schemes, creating pre-lab presentations; Creating and marking lab quizzes, create and setup bell ringer tests and exams; Assists in ensuring lab content is significantly aligned with lecture material to reinforce lecture concepts; Ensuring students are engaging with course material by using lab presentations, models, self-palpation techniques, and physiological testing; and

Ensuring all grades are upload to MyLS in a timely manner,Lab Instruction

  • Provides professional lab instruction and support students in their development, including: Adhere to course standards and maintain academic/mark integrity of the course; Maintains student lab attendance and grading records; Ensure students use models and equipment properly by providing proper instruction; Supports students in the development of professional work habits, skills and efficient use of resources including maintaining and protecting anatomy and physiology resources; and Create and foster a safe and welcoming environment for student

Qualifications

  • Minimum MSc degree in Kinesiology or related field.
  • Experience in teaching or equivalent pedagogical skill in optimizing the operation and educational value of formal labs an asset. Strong knowledge in human anatomy and physiology and experience working with anatomy models.
  • Ability to create laboratory exercises , which may require coding or on-line assessment tools.
  • Familiarity with the preparation of materials for the Web.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including experience in facilitating student participation and engagement in mathematics through the use of motivation, influence, and persuasion.
  • Well-developed organizational skills to ensure that labs are prepared, delivered, and administered each week consist with the department’s demanding course schedule; skill in advance planning, scheduling and organizing of time, resources, materials, and available personnel;
  • Excellent supervisory skills.

This position is not deemed eligible for educational equivalencies

Hours of Work: This position is part-time continuing. The normal hours of work per week are 11 hours from Monday to Friday. The Fall and Winter lab times for this year are Wednesday from 12pm to 6pm. Flexibility in hours will be required including evening hours to accommodate lab sessions. This position is subject to a layoff period from May to August.

Compensation:

Level: E

Rate of Pay: $42.83 to $45.28 with an annual step progression on anniversary date up to$48.95

Considerations for new hire step placements include, qualifications and length/depth of required experience, relevant market rates for similar jobs, internal equity, and estimated learning curve in starting the job.
