Worley Consulting's Environmental & Sustainability help clients manage environmental liabilities, restore impacted sites, and deliver responsible environmental outcomes across the full asset lifecycle. Purpose of the Role

As an Intermediate Environmental Scientist, Engineer-in-Training, or Technologist, you will play a key role in delivering contaminated site assessment, remediation, reclamation, and environmental monitoring programs across northeastern Alberta. This position offers a unique blend of field leadership, technical execution, project coordination, and team mentorship.

Working closely with Project Managers, senior technical specialists, and multidisciplinary teams, you will lead environmental field programs, contribute to technical assessments and reporting, mentor junior staff, and support successful project delivery. This role is ideal for environmental professionals seeking to expand their leadership capabilities while continuing to build technical expertise within a collaborative consulting environment.

Calgary, Alberta or Edmonton, Alberta (Considered with Regular Travel Requirements)

This position supports environmental projects throughout the Cold Lake region. Preference will be given to candidates who are currently based in, or willing to relocate to, Cold Lake, Alberta.

Candidates based in Calgary or Edmonton may be considered, but regular travel to Cold Lake, including overnight stays, is required to support field work, project oversight, mentoring, and collaboration with local teams.Average travel expected is 2–4 weeks in Cold Lake over a two-month period, depending on project needs, and may include multi-day field assignments, site visits, environmental monitoring, remediation activities, mentoring, and team coordination.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and coordinate environmental field programs, including groundwater and surface water monitoring, soil sampling, drilling oversight, borehole logging, groundwater well installation, test pitting, remedial excavations, and reclamation activities.
  • Plan and execute environmental investigations and contaminated site assessment programs in accordance with Alberta regulatory requirements and industry best practices.
  • Conduct and support Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments (ESAs) and contribute to remediation and risk management strategies.
  • Provide field leadership during environmental assessment, remediation, and restoration projects, ensuring work is completed safely, efficiently, and to a high technical standard.
  • Oversee field crews, subcontractors, and project resources while maintaining project schedules, safety expectations, and quality standards.
  • Mentor junior environmental professionals through field supervision, technical guidance, coaching, and on-the-job training.
  • Support Project Managers with project planning, scheduling, budgeting, logistics coordination, project execution, and issue resolution.
  • Collect, interpret, and evaluate environmental data to support project recommendations, risk assessments, and technical reporting.
  • Prepare high-quality technical reports, regulatory submissions, environmental assessments, remediation summaries, and project documentation that meet both client and regulatory requirements.
  • Build and maintain positive working relationships with clients, regulatory agencies, subcontractors, and project stakeholders.
  • Prepare, implement, and promote site-specific health, safety, and sustainability plans that identify, reduce, and eliminate risks to employees, clients, contractors, and the public.
  • Promote a strong culture of health, safety, sustainability, and operational excellence across all project activities.

Qualifications / Skill Set

Education & Professional Background

  • Diploma or Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Technology, or a related discipline from an accredited institution.
  • Typically 5+ years of environmental consulting, contaminated sites, remediation, or environmental field experience.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting contaminated site assessment and remediation projects within Alberta.
  • Professionals with 8+ years of environmental field experience seeking to transition into a formal leadership role are encouraged to apply.
  • Eligibility for, or registration with, a relevant professional designation such as ., ., ., ASET, or equivalent is considered an asset.

Technical Expertise

  • Strong understanding of contaminated site assessment, remediation, reclamation, and environmental monitoring programs.
  • Experience conducting Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments (ESAs) in accordance with Alberta regulatory requirements.
  • Knowledge of Alberta environmental regulations, guidelines, liability management programs, and compliance frameworks.
  • Experience leading field programs involving drilling, groundwater monitoring, soil sampling, well installations, and remediation activities.
  • Ability to interpret environmental data and develop practical, defensible technical recommendations.
  • Experience preparing technical reports, regulatory submissions, and client deliverables.
  • Previous experience supporting oil and gas, energy, industrial, mining, or resource-sector projects is highly desirable.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and standard environmental reporting tools.

Leadership & Project Delivery Skills

  • Demonstrated ability to lead environmental field teams and coordinate multiple project activities simultaneously.
  • Experience mentoring and developing junior staff through coaching, training, and technical guidance.
  • Strong organizational and project coordination skills with the ability to manage competing priorities and project schedules.
  • Ability to work independently while contributing effectively within multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Strong problem-solving, decision-making, and critical-thinking capabilities.
  • Adaptable, self-motivated, and capable of thriving in dynamic field and office environments.

Communication & Professional Skills

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build collaborative relationships with team members, clients, regulators, and stakeholders.
  • Ability to communicate technical information clearly and effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Commitment to delivering high-quality work and maintaining professional standards.

Additional Requirements

  • Valid Class 5 driver's license with a satisfactory driving record.
  • Ability to work safely in outdoor environments and varying weather conditions.
  • Willingness to relocate to Cold Lake, Alberta is strongly preferred.
