Your opportunity:

The Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology (LMP) occupies a unique position at the interface between basic biomedical science and clinical practice. We are an assembly of over 400 investigators, scientists, and clinicians, who educate and mentor trainees pursuing undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate medical studies, engaged in investigating disease mechanisms and patterns and translating new knowledge and discoveries into improved health outcomes for patients and populations.

Situated in LMP, the Temerty Centre for Artificial Intelligence Research and Education inMedicine (T-CAIREM), an interdepartmental centre, serves as a focal point for collaboration between computer scientists, healthcare providers, trainees, medical basic science researchers and industry to advance health through machine learning. The missionof the Centre is to advance research, education, knowledge dissemination and digital infrastructure in the field of AI in medicine.

T-CAIREM aims to be a global leader in facilitating high quality, accessible educational offerings and research collaborations at the intersection of AI and health. T-CAIREM seeks to build capacity to reflect the emerging role of AI in healthcare professions and to build strategic partnerships to implement new solutions that can transform practice.

As the Director, Innovations and Partnerships, you will advance T-CAIREM’s financial sustainability by leading commercialization and business development activities across its research and education portfolio in AI in medicine. You will identify and pursue grant, government, and industry funding opportunities, develop and steward strategic partnerships, and guide initiatives toward implementation and commercialization. Working with inventors, researchers, and external partners, you will help protect intellectual property, structure and negotiate commercialization agreements, and build diverse and sustainable revenue streams that support T-CAIREM’s mission and continued impact.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Leading commercialization projects, including reviewing and assessing invention disclosures and developing project schedules and reporting
  • Writing grant and investment proposals and solicitation documentation for proof of concept, product development, and commercialization activities
  • Developing and negotiating commercialization agreements, licensing terms, start-up company structures, and complex business contracts
  • Developing strategies to protect intellectual property and ensuring agreements align with University standards and guidelines
  • Developing business development strategies, analyzing market data, and pursuing new business, funding, partnership, and growth opportunities
  • Identifying and stewarding research and innovation partnerships and facilitating collaboration between academic and industry partners
  • Advising inventors on product development and providing researchers with information on commercialization matters
  • Forecasting, planning, and monitoring complex budgets and revenue activities, including verifying financial elements in grant submissions

Essential Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. or doctorate degree, or an acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Minimum eight (8) years of experience leading commercialization and business development activities
  • Demonstrated experience leading commercialization projects and reviewing invention disclosures
  • Experience writing grant and investment proposals to secure proof of concept and product development funding
  • Demonstrated experience developing and negotiating commercialization agreements, licensing terms, start-up company structures, and complex business contracts
  • Experience applying contract law and developing strategies to protect intellectual property
  • Demonstrated experience developing research and industry partnerships and identifying new business, funding, or collaboration opportunities
  • Experience analyzing market data and implementing sales and marketing plans to support revenue-generating activities
  • Experience analyzing commercialization metrics and preparing reports using Excel and business intelligence tools such as Power BI or Tableau
  • Experience advising inventors on product development and commercialization
  • Experience forecasting, planning, and monitoring complex budgets and verifying financial elements in grant submissions
  • Understanding of the AI and digital health innovation ecosystem, including commercialization considerations for AI-enabled medical technologies
  • Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office and experience using customer relationship management (CRM) systems, such as Salesforce, HubSpot, or Microsoft Dynamics, to manage partnership pipelines, stakeholder engagement, and business development activities
  • Ability to convey highly complex, technical, and confidential information
  • Strong analytical and formal negotiation skills
  • Effective relationship-management, collaboration, and conflict-resolution skills
