Job Description

Reporting to the Inclusion Coordinator, you will be responsible for assisting with the provision of recreation and leisure opportunities for participants with a wide range of disabilities. Your role will involve the planning, implementation, and facilitation of adaptive programming, and assisting with the integration of participants in typical recreation programs offered by the City of Oshawa.

What You Will Do

  • Plan, implement and facilitate adaptive programs for participants with disabilities.
  • Provide support to the Inclusion Support Instructors as needed.
  • Complete participant observations city wide and provide suggestions to promote successful integration.
  • Provide one-to-one inclusion support, as needed.
  • Create resources such as communication boards, and visual schedules.
  • Complete research on diagnoses, best practice, current trends, and resources in the field of Therapeutic and Municipal Recreation.
  • Liaison with community organizations to ensure alignment with the needs of the community, and to promote our adaptive programming.
  • Provide feedback to the Inclusion Services Coordinator regarding program and participant integration.
  • Suggest and implement program and environmental adaptations to create an inclusive environment.
  • Maintain communication with caregivers as appropriate.
  • Promote appropriate behaviour using learned strategies and acquired skills.
  • Physically assist with lifts, transfers, toileting, and other needs as required.
  • Ensure the safety, enjoyment and care of registered participants in City of Oshawa programs.
  • Respond to first aid situations.
  • Become familiar with City of Oshawa policies, procedures and emergency procedures and be able to implement such procedures (fire, power failure, building evacuation).
  • Report all incidents, accidents, issues and concerns to the Inclusion Services Coordinator.
  • Complete all formal paperwork (accident, incident, complaint forms, weekly attendance).
  • Answer questions and inquiries, while providing effective customer service to registrants/patrons of the program.
  • Support and demonstrate the City of Oshawa core values of Authenticity, Courage, and Trust.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

What We Are Looking For

  • Completed education or current enrollment in a related field is an asset (e.g., Educational Assistant, Nursing, Recreation and Leisure Studies, Teacher, Therapeutic Recreation).
  • Experience supporting children and youth with diverse physical, cognitive, developmental, behavioural, sensory, and communication needs.
  • Previous volunteer or employment in a recreation setting is considered an asset.
  • Ability to provide own transportation for travel between work locations as required.
  • Must possess and keep current Standard First Aid & CPR “C” qualifications (or be willing to obtain prior to starting employment).
  • Demonstrate strong customer service and communication skills to deal effectively and courteously with staff and the general public; strong interpersonal skills with the ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships.
  • Demonstrate strong organizational skills to effectively oversee programming operations; strong problem‑solving skills to address unexpected challenges.
  • Attend all mandatory staff meetings and trainings, including evenings and weekends.
  • Ability to swim is considered an asset.
  • Ability to ice skate is considered an asset.

As a condition of employment, the City of Oshawa will require successful candidates to provide a Criminal Records Check with Vulnerable Sector Search.
