Job description

CREATIVITY IS OUR SUPERPOWER. It’s our heritage and it’s also our future. Because we don’t just make toys. We create innovative products and experiences that inspire fans, entertain audiences and develop children through play. Mattel is at its best when every member of our team feels respected, included, and heard—when everyone can show up as themselves and do their best work every day. We value and share an infinite range of ideas and voices that evolve and broaden our perspectives with a reach that extends into all our brands, partners, and suppliers.

The Team:

The Quality Engineering team partners with Product Design, Development, and Manufacturing to ensure all toys and consumer products meet Mattel’s standards for safety, compliance, durability, and play performance. The team supports products from concept through production and post-market, working closely with global manufacturing partners and internal and external laboratories. We leverage data, consumer insights, and real-world use conditions to ensure products are safe, compliant, and built to withstand how kids actually play with them.

The Opportunity:

Mattel is seeking a Staff Quality Engineer to provide enterprise-level technical leadership and shape the global quality strategy across brands, regions, and product categories.

This role serves as a subject matter expert and strategic leader, driving standardization, innovation, and continuous improvement in quality systems, product safety, and engineering practices. The Staff Quality Engineer influences global decisions, partners with senior leadership, and establishes long-term strategies to ensure best-in-class product quality and consumer safety.

This position is based in Montreal, Canada.

What Your Impact Will Be:

  • Define and drive global quality strategy, standards, and best practices across all brands, product categories, and regions.
  • Establish and evolve enterprise-wide frameworks for Product Requirements Documents, Product Characterization Documents, validation, and risk management.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert in global toy safety regulations, driving proactive compliance strategies and engagement with regulatory bodies and industry groups.
  • Lead the development and implementation of advanced risk management methodologies and reliability strategies across the organization.
  • Drive enterprise-level analysis of quality data, including consumer insights, field performance, manufacturing, and testing, to identify systemic issues and long-term improvement opportunities.
  • Establish and standardize investigation and root cause methodologies across global teams.
  • Partner with global manufacturing, sourcing, and supplier networks to drive capability development and long-term quality improvements.
  • Influence product design and innovation by integrating quality, safety, and reliability considerations early in development.
  • Mentor and develop engineering talent across the organization, acting as a technical authority and coach.
  • Lead large-scale continuous improvement initiatives, including benchmarking industry best practices and implementing new methodologies.
  • Establish KPIs and metrics to assess global quality system performance and drive continuous improvement.
  • Represent Mattel in regulatory, industry, and external quality forums.

What We’re Looking For:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or a related field; an advanced degree is preferred.
  • 10 or more years of experience in quality engineering, product development, or manufacturing.
  • Extensive experience working across global supply chains and regulatory environments.
  • Expertise in statistical analysis, reliability engineering, and risk management methodologies.
  • Proven track record of driving enterprise-level quality improvement.
  • Recognized technical expert in quality engineering and product safety.
  • Deep and broad knowledge of global toy and consumer product regulations.
  • Proven ability to influence at executive and enterprise levels.
  • Strong strategic thinking with the ability to translate vision into execution.
  • Exceptional analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead global initiatives and drive organizational change.
  • Strong mentoring capability and leadership presence.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Demonstrated a growth mindset by staying curious and continuously learning, embracing challenges, and improving themselves.
