Chief Medical Officers (2), BC Women’s Hospital + Health Centre & BC Children’s Hospital
PHSA is seeking two Chief Medical Officers (CMO): one for BCW and one for BCCH. Reporting to the Executive Vice-President, Clinical Service Delivery (EVP) and the Vice President of Medical and Academic Affairs (VPMAA), and working in full partnership with the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of their respective program, the CMOs are the most senior medical leaders in BCW and BCCH, supporting physicians, nurse practitioners, midwives, and dentists. These leadership roles ensure all programs and services are of the highest quality and standard of medical care for these crucial patient populations. Together, the CMO and the COO ensure the direction of the human, financial, and material resources required to support the goals, policies, and vision of the program and PHSA as a whole. The CMOs also hold executive accountability for research programs, and champion a highly innovative and intellectual research culture. In addition, the CMOs must work extremely closely with each other to ensure true integration and continuity of care across their shared campus.
The ideal candidates are highly regarded clinicians as well as seasoned medical leaders who can oversee a broad portfolio and manage a multitude of critical relationships and initiatives. They bring the ability to balance long-term vision with day-to-day operational needs, and bring a deep commitment to patientcentred care, clinician wellness, clinical excellence, and anti-racism. They have a track record of developing and implementing strategies that enhance clinical quality, provider wellness and safety, and patient outcomes by identifying opportunities to collaborate and partner with clinical, academic and research partners. They possess exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, allowing them to effectively collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, and in particular will be able to work across a wide variety of disciplines in the Women’s or Children’s context. They have experience managing and mentoring physicians – and also ideally other providers such as Nurse Practitioners. In addition, they have a reputation for fostering a culture of continuous learning, and promoting evidence-based practices. A practicing physician in an aligned discipline is strongly preferred, as is current registration with the BC College of Physicians and surgeons, or eligibility for registration.
While both positions share many leadership requirements, candidates should bring deep clinical credibility and established relationships within the respective environments they will serve. For the CMO, BCW role, experience and credibility within women’s health, maternal-fetal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, neonatology, reproductive health, or a closely related specialty would be considered a significant asset. For the CMO, BCCH role, experience and credibility within pediatrics, pediatric subspecialties, child and youth mental health, or a closely related specialty would be highly valued. In both cases, candidates must possess the clinical stature and leadership capability to engage, influence, and inspire a broad and diverse medical staff community.
