Financial Controller

Our client, a leading organization in the energy sector, is seeking an experienced Finance Controller to join their team in Oshawa, Ontario.

This is a high-impact leadership opportunity for a strategic finance professional who enjoys partnering with senior business leaders to influence operational and financial performance. As a key member of the leadership team, you will oversee a team of finance professionals while providing financial guidance, business planning support, and controllership oversight across a large, complex business unit. You'll play an integral role in driving financial accountability, supporting major business initiatives, and ensuring strong governance and internal controls.

This is a fully on-site position based in Oshawa, Ontario.

Responsibilities

• Serve as the primary finance and accounting advisor to senior site leadership, providing strategic financial guidance and decision support.
• Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing Controllership team, fostering a culture of collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement.
• Oversee monthly and year-end financial reporting, ensuring the accuracy, completeness, and integrity of financial information.
• Lead budgeting, forecasting, business planning, and variance analysis activities while providing actionable insights to leadership.
• Champion strong financial governance by maintaining effective internal controls and supporting audit requirements.
• Identify financial risks and opportunities, recommending solutions that align with organizational objectives.
• Partner with operational leaders to develop and evaluate business cases supporting capital investments and strategic initiatives.
• Collaborate with corporate finance teams, including Planning, Tax, Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, and other key stakeholders to ensure alignment across the organization.
• Drive continuous improvement initiatives by enhancing financial processes, systems, and reporting capabilities.
• Present financial results, forecasts, and strategic recommendations to senior leadership and executive stakeholders.

Qualifications

• CPA designation (or internationally recognized equivalent) in good standing.
• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related discipline.
• 8-10 years of progressive finance and accounting experience within a complex organization.
• Previous leadership experience managing and developing finance or controllership teams.
• Strong background in financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, month-end and year-end close, and variance analysis.
• Experience establishing and maintaining strong internal controls, financial governance, and audit readiness.
• Demonstrated success supporting strategic planning, business case development, and financial decision-making.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills with the ability to influence senior leaders and build strong cross‑functional relationships.
• Strong analytical mindset with a proactive approach to identifying risks, opportunities, and process improvements.
• Experience within the utilities, energy, manufacturing, mining, automotive, or other capital-intensive industries is considered an asset.

Must-Haves

• Previous leadership experience managing finance or controllership teams.
• Strong experience with budgeting, forecasting, financial reporting, and internal controls.
