What you'll do

The Specialist Engineer – Investment Planning is BC Hydro’s recognized subject matter expert for generation asset investment planning. The role provides strategic leadership for long‑term maintenance and capital investment planning, ensuring generation assets are managed to optimize reliability, safety, environmental performance, and lifecycle value. Working across multiple business units and disciplines, the position leads the development of asset investment strategies, risk‑based decision frameworks, and capital project prioritization plans. This role influences decision‑making, and provides technical leadership for high‑risk, high‑impact investment decisions affecting BC Hydro’s generation assets. It is responsible for integrating maintenance and capital planning activities, supporting long‑term reliability and asset performance.

Responsibilities

• Develop mid‑ and long‑term generation asset investment strategies.
• Integrate maintenance, operations, engineering, and capital planning to meet asset management objectives.
• Advise senior leadership on investment priorities, risk mitigation, and emerging asset risks.
• Improve investment planning processes, business rules, and standards application.
• Lead complex, high‑value maintenance and capital investment plans with cross‑functional impact.
• Resolve cross‑organizational and cross‑functional risks and integrate diverse perspectives into decision making.
• Assess and lead high‑impact decisions involving financial loss, energy production, water conveyance, and longer‑term strategic outcomes.
• Direct asset risk assessments, business cases, Investment Summary documents, and funding recommendations.
• Recommend investment priorities across asset classes and generating stations to maximize value and manage risk.
• Serve as a recognized specialist in generation asset planning, asset management, and risk‑based decision‑making.
• Consult with Engineering, Operations, Asset Planning, and other Generation partners.
• Coordinate stakeholders to align maintenance, capital, and operational plans with GSAP objectives.
• Influence decisions through technical expertise, business acumen, and stakeholder engagement.
• Exercise independent judgment on complex and ambiguous asset management issues.
• Approve or recommend expenditures and investment strategies within delegated authority.
• Build stronger relationships across Generation and mentor other Asset Planners in risk analysis, building organizational capability and business continuity.

What you bring

• Graduated with an Engineering Degree recognized by Canadian institutions.
• Registered or eligible for immediate registration as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng) with the Engineers and Geoscientists of BC (EGBC).
• A minimum of ten (10+) years of relevant and progressive engineering or asset management experience.

Applicants who do not meet the full qualifications or who have less work experience may be considered for a lower‑level position.

• Demonstrated leadership, communication, mentoring, conflict management, and stakeholder relationship skills.

• Thorough understanding of BC Hydro’s asset management practices, generation assets, maintenance, reliability, and utility operations.
• Proven ability to develop risk‑ and value‑based business cases, investment strategies, and long‑term capital plans.
• Demonstrated experience leading asset management and investment planning initiatives.
• Extensive knowledge of asset management principles, risk‑based decision‑making, lifecycle planning, and capital portfolio management.
• Proven ability to influence outcomes, advise senior leaders, and manage complex stakeholder relationships.

Key Requirements & Benefits

• Some travel will be required.
• Driver’s License Class 5 required.
• P.Eng & EGBC in good standing.
• The role is assessed as safety sensitive; pre‑qualification alcohol and drug testing will be required as a pre‑condition to employment.
• Eligible for a Remote Incentive of 20% for eligible remote locations.
• Bridge River operates a modified work week (4 day).
• Company transportation is available from Vancouver, Kamloops, Vernon, and surrounding areas.
• Staff accommodations are available.
• Commuting employees are entitled to a daily food allowance of $57.50 per day when at Bridge River as per MOU#36.
• Applicants should familiarize themselves with the work and living environment associated with Bridge River.
