Key Responsibilities

  • Reports to the Manager of Patient Care Services and receives clinical direction and work assignments from the Senior Occupational Therapist.
  • Supports the Occupational Therapist in implementing approved treatment plans, therapeutic interventions, and rehabilitation programs.
  • Provides patient-centred support aligned with established treatment, rehabilitation, and recovery goals.
  • Assists with or delivers individual treatment interventions under the guidance and supervision of the Occupational Therapist.
  • Assists in the planning, facilitation, and delivery of therapeutic group programs and activities.
  • Supports patients in the use of adaptive equipment, assistive devices, and therapeutic tools to enhance independence and functional outcomes.
  • Educates and demonstrates the safe and effective use of therapeutic and adaptive equipment.
  • Monitors patient progress and promptly communicates observations, changes in condition, and relevant health information to the supervising Occupational Therapist.
  • Participates in program, departmental, and organizational quality improvement initiatives and activities.
  • Maintains clean, safe, and organized treatment environments in accordance with safety and infection prevention standards.
  • Assists with the maintenance, monitoring, and inventory management of therapy equipment and program supplies.

Qualifications

  • Diploma in Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA) from a recognized post-secondary institution.
  • Current certification in CPR and First Aid.
  • Completion of Safety and Security in the Workplace Training, or willingness to complete the training prior to the commencement of employment.
  • Valid driver's licence and access to a reliable vehicle.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in psychiatric and mental health care.
  • Knowledge and experience in the use of adaptive equipment and assistive devices to support patient care and rehabilitation.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of relevant legislation, including the Mental Health Act, Health Care Consent Act, and Substitute Decisions Act.
  • Proficient in the use of computer applications, with the ability to support and coach patients in computer use as required.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to engage effectively with patients, families, and interdisciplinary team members.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within a team environment and communicate effectively with diverse patient populations and stakeholder groups.
  • Proven ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively as a member of a multidisciplinary healthcare team.

Language Requirements

English level A- is mandatory in oral expression, comprehension, reading and writing. Bilingual (French/English) is considered an asset.
