HireArt is helping an on-demand, autonomous ride-hailing company find a Mechanical Engineer - Serviceability (Contract role) to drive Design for Serviceability (DFS) initiatives that improve the maintainability, reliability, and service efficiency of autonomous vehicles.
In this role, you’ll evaluate product designs for serviceability, collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams to improve repairability, and help develop inspection and maintenance strategies that reduce downtime and optimize fleet performance. You'll also identify opportunities to improve service processes, tooling, and maintenance programs while supporting engineering and ERP system enhancements.
The ideal candidate is a collaborative mechanical engineer with strong design and manufacturing knowledge who is passionate about improving product serviceability throughout the development lifecycle. They thrive in cross-functional environments and enjoy solving complex engineering challenges that improve reliability, maintainability, and operational efficiency.
As a Mechanical Engineer - Serviceability (Contract role), you'll:- Partner with cross-functional teams to drive Design for Serviceability (DFS) initiatives throughout the product development lifecycle.
- Evaluate component and assembly designs for serviceability, including accessibility, tooling clearance, ergonomics, and ease of replacement.
- Identify specialized tooling requirements and collaborate with tooling teams on tool design and development.
- Develop cost and repair-time analyses that identify opportunities to reduce repair complexity and improve service efficiency.
- Partner with technical writing teams to develop and maintain service procedures and repair documentation.
- Develop service part release strategies and maintain the Service Bill of Materials (BOM) to support spare parts planning.
- Collaborate with engineering teams to develop, implement, and maintain inspection and preventive maintenance programs for operational and test fleet vehicles.
- Evaluate maintenance effectiveness, recommend process improvements, and lead initiatives that increase fleet uptime and operational efficiency.
- Partner with technicians and program managers to implement maintenance plans and ensure compliance with industry standards and safety requirements.
Requirements
- A bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or a related discipline
- 4+ years of mechanical engineering experience, preferably within a service engineering, automotive, or product development environment
- Strong 3D CAD experience; CATIA experience is a plus
- Experience designing products for manufacturing, assembly, and serviceability across a variety of fabrication processes
- Solid understanding of complex mechanical and electrical systems
- Familiarity with applicable industry standards and safety requirements
- Strong documentation, organizational, and project management skills with the ability to work independently
Bonus Qualifications:- Experience using ERP systems to support maintenance planning and operational data management

Commitment: This is a full-time, ongoing contract position staffed via HireArt. It will be onsite and available to candidates who are local to the Foster City, CA area.
