Job description

At ABB, we help industries run leaner and cleaner—and every person here makes that happen. You’ll be empowered to lead, supported to grow, and proud of the impact we create together. Join us and help run what runs the world.

This Position reports to:

Production Engineering Manager

We are seeking an Electronic Technician to join our Engineering team at our facility dedicated to emergency lighting products. Reporting to the Manufactering Engineering Manager, this role supports the full product lifecycle — from design and debug through validation, documentation, and continuous improvement. The Electronic Technician bridges the gap between design engineering and manufacturing, providing critical hands-on technical support to ensure that products are reliable, well-documented, and ready for production. This position requires initiative, precision, and the ability to deliver practical solutions in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary environment.
Your Role: Own the Challenge

  • Perform design debug activities on PCBAs and electronic assemblies: identify root causes of design or assembly failures using systematic troubleshooting methods, test equipment (oscilloscopes, signal generators), and schematic analysis.
  • Execute root cause analysis (RCA) for field returns, production failures, and prototype defects; document findings and propose corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Conduct PCB minor layout modifications using Altium Designer: adjust component placement, trace routing, and design rule adjustments in close collaboration with design engineers.
  • Perform BOM (Bill of Materials) verification: cross-check component references, manufacturer part numbers, footprints, and specifications against design schematics to ensure accuracy and manufacturability.
  • Support engineering activities on existing or legacy products: documentation to enable repair, redesign, or obsolescence management.
  • Create, validate, and maintain process flowcharts describing test procedures, assembly sequences, and quality checkpoints to support manufacturing and engineering teams.
  • Write, update, and maintain clear work instructions (WIs), standard operating procedures (SOPs), and engineering documentation (test plans, inspection checklists, deviation reports) to ensure repeatability and traceability.
  • Perform or assist with minor mechanical assembly tasks: mounting PCBAs into housings, cable harnessing, connector installation, and prototype build-up in support of engineering validation activities.
  • Support the engineering team in design reviews, prototype builds, and pre-production trials, providing hands-on technical feedback based on practical assembly and test experience.
  • Maintain organized and well-documented records of all work performed, including test data, component samples, rework logs, and revision histories, in compliance with ABB quality and traceability standards.

What it takes to run what runs the world

  • College diploma (DEC) or technical degree in Electronics Technology, Electrical Engineering Technology, or a closely related field. An equivalent combination of education and demonstrated hands-on experience will be considered.
  • Minimum 3–8 years of experience in an electronic technician, design support, or R&D lab technician role.
  • Experience with Altium Designer for schematic, PCB layout review, and minor design modifications.
  • Experience with AutoCAD for mechanical or panel drawings is an asset.
  • Strong hands-on experience with electronic test and measurement equipment: oscilloscopes, multimeters, bench power supplies, function generators, LCR meters, and soldering/rework stations.
  • Ability to read and interpret electronic schematics, PCB layout files, assembly drawings, and component datasheets.
  • Solid understanding of analog and digital electronics fundamentals, with the ability to perform basic circuit calculations (Ohm's law, power, filtering, signal levels, component derating).
  • Experience with BOM management and component verification, including cross-referencing part numbers, datasheets, and PCB footprints.
  • Familiarity with IPC standards (IPC-A-610, IPC-7711/7721) for PCBA assembly, inspection, and rework is an asset.
  • Experience creating and maintaining technical documentation: work instructions, test procedures, flowcharts, engineering change records, and inspection reports.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills in both French and English. French is required; English is required to interact with engineering teams and suppliers outside Quebec.
  • Detail-oriented, methodical, and organized — able to manage multiple tasks simultaneously while maintaining a high standard of documentation and workmanship.
  • Collaborative mindset with a proactive attitude, high autonomy, and a genuine interest in continuous learning and technical problem-solving.
  • Experience in the lighting or power electronics industry is a strong asset.
