Job description

Determined, imaginative, curious—if these are some of the ways you describe yourself, we want to learn more about you!

At TC Energy, we are proud to connect the world to the energy it needs. Guided by our values of safety in every step, personal accountability, one team and active learning, we deliver the critical energy that North America and the world rely on while balancing reliability, affordability and sustainability.

The Opportunity

Are you passionate about fostering meaningful relationships with Indigenous communities? TC Energy is seeking an experienced Indigenous Relations (IR) Engagement Lead to join our team in the Fort McMurray and north central Alberta (AB) area.

Reporting to the Team Lead, Indigenous Relations, Northern AB, you will lead engagement with Indigenous groups while also supporting the internal coordination, documentation, and reporting processes that underpin effective Indigenous Relations across the business.

In this role, you will be responsible for establishing and maintaining strong working relationships with Indigenous communities in the Fort McMurray area, while ensuring engagement activities are well-documented, organized, and aligned with regulatory and company requirements.

You will be part of a team that balances external engagement with internal coordination. This includes working collaboratively across business units and with leadership at all levels, while supporting consistent tracking of engagement activities, maintaining accurate records, and contributing to internal reporting and briefing materials.

Effective Indigenous participation and engagement are core to TC Energy’s approach to Indigenous Relations. This role plays a key part in delivering IR strategies through both relationship-building and the systems and processes that support it. This will require travel to remote locations across Fort McMurray and north central Alberta, along with strong attention to detail in managing documentation and administrative workflows.

Success in this role requires a solid understanding of the governance, cultural, and historical context of Indigenous communities in the region, including Métis communities and organizations, combined with the ability to maintain organized, accurate, and defensible records that support engagement outcomes.

What you’ll do

  • Lead and manage relationships with Indigenous groups, fostering support for TC Energy and its projects and operations through clear, timely, and respectful communication.
  • Lead the implementation of project engagement plans and contribute to the development and refinement of project execution plans in alignment with the Company’s IR Policy and Strategy.
  • Take ownership of engagement documentation and records management, ensuring all activities, correspondence, and commitments are accurately captured, maintained, and audit-ready within applicable systems.
  • Maintain and track engagement activities, commitments, and deliverables across projects, ensuring consistency, follow-through, and alignment across internal teams.
  • Prepare and coordinate high-quality documentation and internal materials, including briefing notes, engagement summaries, business cases, and leadership updates, while supporting internal reporting through accurate and well-controlled information.
  • Support the broader Indigenous Relations team with administrative functions, including records management, activity tracking, documentation coordination, and internal reporting to ensure consistent and efficient team operations.
  • Coordinate internal workflows and provide issue management support by tracking, escalating, and helping resolve risks and concerns, while collaborating across business units and representing the company in engagements and discussions with Indigenous communities.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Relevant post-secondary education is required; a bachelor’s degree or higher is preferred. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • A minimum of 6 years of experience in Indigenous Relations, Environment, Law, Community Development, Stakeholder Engagement, Land, or Government Relations.
  • Experience engaging with Indigenous groups, including working with representatives and community members to navigate and resolve complex and sensitive issues.
  • Knowledge of federal and provincial regulatory processes and consultation guidelines, particularly those related to the energy industry in Canada.
  • Strong understanding of Indigenous governance, history, and rights in Alberta, including Métis communities and regional organizations.
  • Advanced written communication skills, with demonstrated ability to prepare clear, accurate, and professional materials (e.g., briefing notes, memos, and business cases) for internal and external audiences.
  • Strong organizational and administrative skills, including the ability to manage documentation, maintain accurate records, track multiple workstreams, and ensure consistency, completeness, and audit-ready datasets across systems.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working directly with Indigenous communities in Alberta, particularly in the Fort McMurray and north central Alberta region.
  • Strong understanding of Métis governance structures, including the Otipemisiwak Métis Government and regional representation (e.g., territories, districts, and locals), and the ability to apply this knowledge in engagement.
  • Experience navigating complex Indigenous relations environments within the energy industry, including balancing multiple stakeholders and differing perspectives with professionalism, respect, and sound judgment.
  • Strong organizational and administrative capability, including managing multiple priorities, coordinating activities, maintaining accurate documentation, and using systems (e.g., CRM, Monday.com) to track and report on work.

This position requires candidates to:

  • Have and maintain a valid driver’s license and provide a driver’s abstract (record) for review
  • Travel within Canada as required by the business

To remain competitive, support our high-performance culture, and allow for more flexibility in the way we work, we offer a hybrid work model and flexible dress code for our eligible office-based workforce in Canada, the U.S., and Mexico. #LI-Hybrid
