Your opportunity:


The Experiential Learning Accommodations Coordinator develops a framework as well as other resources for accommodations within Experiential Learning / Work Integrated Learning (e.g. Co-Ops, Internships, Professional Experience Year – PEY ) environments and acts as an adviser on complex accommodations for staff in Accessibility Services, Professional Faculties and partner sites in the community where students may be assigned. The focus of this role will be exclusively on accommodations where the University has a legal duty to accommodate in an Experiential Learning / Work-Integrated Learning setting because the opportunity is formally or informally part of a student’s degree or academic program. As part of this work, the incumbent also develops a framework for accommodating the cognitive impact of mental health disabilities within Experiential Learning; provides training and resources for staff in Accessibility Services on applying the frameworks, and analyzes and develops appropriate exceptions to guidelines for accommodations and applying best practices in accommodation.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Conducting detailed analysis on program efficiency and student learning outcomes to inform program planning activities
  • Consulting with instructors, administrators and student groups on the development of tailored programming needs
  • Planning and overseeing the implementation of an evaluation framework for programs and initiatives
  • Implementing plans and process improvements for program and service activities
  • Analyzing potential experiential learning opportunities to determine suitability with student academic learning objectives
  • Liaising with course instructors and staff to ensure students receive support required for academic, practicum and/or placement accommodations
  • Informing students of experiential leadership development opportunities
  • Serving as an expert resource to a group of professionals in the speciality

Essential Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in a discipline relevant to disability issues such as education, social work, psychology, learning disabilities or an acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum five years related experience developing accommodations for students in the post-secondary environment. Must have demonstrated expertise in developing, implementing and monitoring accommodations for students in experiential learning opportunities.
  • Excellent computer skills, e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, data management system.
  • Must have demonstrated expertise in understanding the cognitive impacts related to neurological and mental health disabilities.
  • Must have a commitment to the principles of equity and inclusion and be able to demonstrate an understanding of the implications of specific disabilities as they relate to a student's success at university and in a broader context.
  • Must understand the strengths and challenges of adults with disabilities and have knowledge of cultural views of disability.
  • Must be able to communicate clearly and professionally (both orally and in writing) with diverse members of the university community.
  • Must have the ability to negotiate complex situations and work in constantly evolving situations.
  • Tolerance for ambiguity and an ability to adapt to change quickly.
  • Demonstrated ability to synthesize knowledge and display sound judgment, problem solving skills, attention to detail and a high degree of accuracy.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and within a team environment.
  • Flexibility, sensitivity, creativity and commitment to work in this area are essential.
  • Ability to advise students in an academic context.

USW Pay Band 14 -- $91,677. with an annual step progression to a maximum of $117,242. Pay scale and job class assignment is subject to determination pursuant to the Job Evaluation/Pay Equity Maintenance Protocol.
