Job description

Position Overview

Under the direction of the Manager of Health Services, the incumbent is responsible for

  • Coordination of care related to specialized breastfeeding support for the Women’s Health Program to include:
  • providing quality care grounded in Indigenous worldview
  • acting as a resource to other health care professionals
  • participating in the discharge process
  • educating patients, family, staff and students with respect to Indigenous breastfeeding knowledge and beliefs
  • performing other related duties as assigned

This is a Designated Indigenous Position. This position may be held by someone of Indigenous ancestry who is First Nation, Metis, Inuit and/or Non-Status. Candidates will be required to undergo screening as required. Applicants are encouraged to self-identify as Indigenous in their cover letter and/or resume.

Experience

  • Minimum three years recent clinical experience in maternal or newborn nursing.
  • Experience with, or knowledge of, applying an Indigenous lens to health operations and exploring ways to provide culturally safe care and to offer traditional Indigenous healing practices as part of health services delivery.
  • Lived experience and understanding of Indigenous healthcare priorities, services, and challenges alongside Indigenous culture, protocols, traditions, and values, both within communities and organizations in Manitoba.
  • Experience in or knowledge of Indigenous Services Canada (ISC) and the relationship between ISC and the Manitoba health care system.
  • Knowledge of Indigenous medicines, healing practices, cultural norms and protocols.

Education (Degree/Diploma/Certificate)

  • Graduation from an approved School of Nursing required. BN preferred.

Special Training:

  • Successful completion of certification as an International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant required. Applicants without the certification will be considered, and the successful applicant must complete certification during the next intake.
  • Completion of Indigenous cultural safety and anti-racism training.
  • Completion of the Oshki-Wenjack course Indigenous Birthworker 4: Lactation Support, or similar Indigenous specific lactation counselor training is considered an asset.
  • Knowledge in traditional medicines and ceremonies an asset.

Certification/Licensure/Registration

  • Responsible for maintaining and providing proof of registration with the College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba (CRNM).
  • Active participation in professional associations e.g., Association of Regulated Nurses of Manitoba (ARNM) preferred.
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Training requirements for this position shall be in accordance with the Shared Health policy.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Scope of practice as documented in the Regulated Health Professions Act (RHPA).
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Canadian colonial impacts on Indigenous people in social, spiritual, emotional, physical, and mental and health contexts.
  • Knowledge and appreciation of the unique history, cultures, and rights of Indigenous Peoples in Canada is required.
  • Commitment to upholding the shared responsibility of creating lasting and meaningful reconciliation in Canada as per Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action (2015) and Manitoba’s Path to Reconciliation Act (2016).
  • Understanding and commitment to the articles set out in the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) as a framework for truth and reconciliation.
  • Knowledge of Indigenous cultural safety and anti-racism actions, inquests and reports, e.g., Jordan’s Principle, Joyce’s Principle and Brian Sinclair Inquest.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of ethical principles and cultural protocols in interactions with Indigenous partners and organizations.
  • Knowledge or familiarity with Indigenous health issues, population health, and health status of citizens in Manitoba.
