Job description

Our client is seeking a Payroll & Benefits Manager to join their growing organization.


The Payroll & Benefits Manager will report into senior leadership and be responsible for leading the payroll and benefits function across a multi-site Canadian organization. This position will oversee full-cycle payroll, employee benefits administration, payroll accounting, compliance, and a small payroll team while acting as the organization's subject matter expert for payroll and benefits. The ideal candidate enjoys improving processes, leading people, and working in a fast-paced environment where accuracy, compliance, and exceptional employee service are paramount.

Must Haves

• Payroll Compliance Practitioner (PCP) designation

• Union payroll experience

• Minimum 2 years of leadership experience

• Employee benefits administration experience

• Payroll accounting experience, including month-end reconciliations and journal entries


Nice to Have

• Payroll Leadership Professional (PLP) designation

• Experience with Payworks payroll software

• Experience managing payroll across multiple locations or entities

• Experience supporting payroll or benefits audits

• Strong Microsoft Excel skills

• Experience identifying and implementing process improvements

• Strong communication and leadership skills




Key Responsibilities

• Oversee and manage the full-cycle payroll process for salaried, hourly, and unionized employees across multiple operations

• Ensure payroll is processed accurately and in compliance with federal and provincial legislation, CRA requirements, and collective agreements

• Lead, coach, and support the payroll and benefits team while ensuring accuracy, compliance, and exceptional customer service

• Administer employee benefit programs, including enrollments, changes, terminations, and annual renewals

• Act as the primary liaison with benefit providers, insurance brokers, and internal stakeholders

• Prepare month-end payroll reconciliations, journal entries, and supporting payroll accounting schedules

• Complete year-end payroll activities, including T4s, ROEs, government remittances, and other statutory reporting requirements

• Prepare payroll reconciliations for government remittances, including CPP, EI, EHT, WSIB, and other regulatory requirements

• Maintain accurate payroll and employee records within the payroll system

• Monitor payroll and benefits costs while supporting budgeting and financial reporting activities

• Support internal and external payroll and benefits audits by preparing required documentation and reconciliations

• Respond to employee payroll and benefits inquiries in a professional and timely manner

• Develop and improve payroll processes, procedures, and internal controls to increase efficiency and accuracy

• Stay current on legislative changes affecting payroll, benefits, and employment standards across Canada
