Job Description:

Reporting to the CAL Manager, the CAL Student Support Officer will provide support for various administrative and student-facing tasks.

The incumbent will support prospective students navigating transitions to post-secondary education, support current students in accessing documentation, and deliver direct support to learners in intake interviews. This position will work directly with students and psychologists to complete assessment and navigate funding processes. They will coordinate third-party ASL services for students who are Deaf/Hard of Hearing and support services of Educational Assistants, Visual Interpreters and Personal Support Workers.

The incumbent will also provide outreach support to the CAL team by planning and participating in events like CAL Open Doors, CAL Virtual Open House, Algonquin Open House, Department Orientations, and high school info sessions.

Other duties may include preparing weekly and Ministry-mandated reports and addressing technical errors in the Clockwork database.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Intake

  • Completes the intake sessions and clinical interviews provided to students who present with no diagnostic documentation to determine the need for students to obtain assessment, counselling or referral services;

  • Provides guidance to students to access funding to help cover the cost of psycho-educational assessments;

  • Collects and evaluates documentation to establish eligibility for support services (Ex. Reviews psychoeducational assessments and medical documentation);

  • In consultation with students, develops and implements individualized assessment plans to ensure College policies and practices are consistent with the Ontario Human Rights Code, AODA and other relevant legislation;

  • Demonstrate in-depth understanding of disability related documentation, including psycho-educational assessments and assessments of functional limitations; must be able to recommend and develop assessment plans;

  • Demonstrated experience assisting and screening students with a wide range of disabilities including students with Learning Disabilities, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Acquired Brain Injury, Deaf/Hard of Hearing, Mental Health, Medical conditions, Visual Impairments, ADHD/ADD, etc (Ex. Using Level B assessment tools like the CAARS Adult ADHD Rating Scales and the Nelson-Denny Reading Test).

CAL Support Person Coordinator

  • Guides / advises others with ongoing involvement in the processing of BSWD requests;

  • Collaborates directly with the Financial Aid and Student Awards Office regarding the BSWD and CSG-DSE funding;

  • Books and backfills employees and/or contractors who provide services to students who require the supports of Educational Assistants, Visual Interpreters, American Sign Language Interpreters and/or Personal Support Workers;

  • Collaborate with the Registrar’s Office to ensure available seats in labs and classrooms for contract support staff;

  • Coordinates access to Brightspace, equipment, textbooks, and all other learning materials required to participate for the third-party service provider;

  • Practical working knowledge of the student information system (Gensis) and SharePoint.

Outreach

  • Delivers disability education information sessions to students, staff and faculty as requested;

  • Represents CAL at outreach events (Algonquin College Open House, Guidance Teachers Forum, Campus Village);

  • Actively develops partnerships between CAL and other College departments to support prospective and current students (Ex. Discovery Days with Recruitment and local high schools, ASPIRE transition events, Career Services workshops focused on students with disabilities);

  • Is the lead in planning and coordinating the CAL Open Doors event for incoming students.

Data and Information Maintenance and Communication

  • Monitors, maintains and updates the CAL TEAMS site as needed;

  • On a weekly basis, and maintains the statistical data on the Student Support Services Dashboard;

  • Analysis of statistical information gathered from the Clockwork Database and Survey Monkey to support service delivery and Ministry-mandated reporting;

  • Distributes weekly email communications to targeted student groups, including promotions for Learning Strategist events, CAL Connects, and reminders regarding CAL test booking deadlines.

Other Duties as assigned

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum of four (4) year degree in Social Sciences, Social Work, Education, Disability Studies, Psychology and other related fields;

  • Minimum of five (5) years of related practical experience working with persons with disabilities in an educational setting;

  • Experience conducting clinical interviews and interpreting clinical documentation;

  • Experience in working with persons with disabilities to facilitate their academic, social and career development;

  • Experience with report writing, data management and statistical analysis.

Anticipated Weekly Schedule: 14 hours/week
