Job Title: Software Developer
Job Description
This Software Developer role focuses on designing and developing software for industrial automation, test systems, and remote IoT devices using C/C++, C#, and .NET. You will contribute to the full software development lifecycle, from requirements and design through coding, testing, integration, and deployment on both microcontroller hardware and complex SCADA-based systems. The position offers the opportunity to work on real-world automation projects used in industries such as automotive, aerospace, life sciences, energy, and consumer products, collaborating closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams to deliver robust, scalable, and maintainable solutions.
Responsibilities
- Develop C# and .NET code for Test Executive and SAMS software products, ensuring clean, maintainable, and well-documented implementations.
- Design and develop software in C and C++ for microcontroller hardware targets such as Arduino and Raspberry Pi, with a focus on remote IoT devices and embedded applications.
- Design and implement SCADA systems using test software packages, including configuring data collection from PLCs, instrumentation, barcode scanners, vision systems, and other third-party equipment.
- Work with input and guidance from senior developers to design programs tailored to specific customer and project requirements, ensuring alignment with technical and functional specifications.
- Commission test system programs on the shop floor during systems integration, and support commissioning and installation at customer sites.
- Collaborate with customers, project managers, software developers, designers, toolmakers, and technicians to troubleshoot issues and deliver fully functional automation and test systems.
- Write programs in clear, concise, high-level structured languages, applying object-oriented design methods where appropriate to support easy integration, reuse, and enhancement for future applications.
- Document all procedures, methods, and data structures within the source code so that other programmers can efficiently understand, maintain, and extend the software.
- Inform customer project personnel about system documentation and provide guidance on resolving technical problems related to software and system operation.
- Deliver customer training specific to each project, including machine operation, programming principles, program functionality, and overall program structure.
- Participate in and support the full software development life cycle, including adherence to coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations.
- Travel to customer sites up to approximately 25% of the time to support installation, commissioning, troubleshooting, and training activities.
- Ensure that all business activities adhere to high ethical standards and comply with the organization’s code of business conduct.
- Follow all health and safety rules and procedures while working in the shop, lab, and customer environments.
Essential Skills
- At least 5 years of professional software engineering experience in production systems, including full software development life cycle activities such as coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations.
- Strong embedded software development experience using C and C++, particularly for microcontroller hardware targets and remote IoT devices.
- Prior working experience with automotive software standards, test procedures, and build processes.
- Experience with project and software configuration management processes and tools, such as GitHub and Jira.
- Solid experience in object-oriented programming languages and design methodologies.
- Proficiency in C# and .NET for developing production-quality applications.
- Ability to write clear, concise, and structured code with thorough in-source documentation of methods, procedures, and data structures.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary engineering teams.
- Willingness and ability to travel up to approximately 25% of the time to support customer projects.
- Commitment to ethical conduct and adherence to organizational codes of business conduct and safety procedures.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience with Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems.
- Experience with Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES).
- Experience within the automotive industry, particularly in infotainment and vehicle electronics.
- Exposure to industrial automation, robotics, machine vision, data acquisition, and Industry 4.0 technologies.
- Comfort working closely with controls engineers, mechanical designers, electrical engineers, and project managers on integrated automation solutions.
- Interest in solving complex engineering challenges and working on custom, project-specific solutions from concept through implementation.
- Desire to expand technical skills beyond pure software development into broader industrial and automation domains.
Work Environment
The Software Development team operates in a collaborative, highly technical environment with a small group of approximately five software professionals, allowing each developer to make a visible impact and take ownership of significant aspects of projects. Developers work closely with controls engineers, electrical designers, mechanical engineers, and project managers to deliver custom automation and testing solutions for a wide range of industries, including automotive, aerospace, life sciences, energy, and consumer products. The environment is fast-paced and project-driven, exposing team members to diverse technologies, products, and engineering challenges, from embedded microcontroller platforms like Arduino and Raspberry Pi to SCADA systems, PLCs, instrumentation, barcode scanners, and vision systems. Team members are encouraged to be hands-on, ask questions, and actively participate in technical discussions, creating a strong learning culture and offering significant opportunities for professional growth and long-term advancement. Work typically involves a mix of office-based software development, lab and shop-floor integration activities, and on-site customer visits for commissioning and training, with adherence to established health and safety procedures.
