Job Summary & Key Responsibilities
The Part-Time Academic position will teach in-person lectures, studios and computer labs for LARC2002 Grading and Drainage at FAFU International College.
NOTE: this course will be taught in Fuzhou, China. Travel to China will occur in late August or first week of September and return in early to mid-December 2026 for up to 3 months, including 10 weeks of instruction plus exam administration and marking.
The lecture has up to 120 students and is comprised of two back to back sessions of 45 minutes each with 5 minutes between. There are 3 studio sessions per week (each is hours), with up to 40 students per session, for 10 weeks. There are 3 computer lab sessions per week (each is hours), with up to 40 students per session, for 8 weeks.
Accommodation and a meal allowance will be provided by FAFU, and Dalhousie will provide transportation between Halifax NS and Fuzhou, China.
The Part-Time Academic will be responsible for all aspects of teaching and administering the lectures and labs, including test preparation, evaluation and teaching platform administration. This position reports to the Chair of the Department.
Course Description:
Landscape architects sculpt the land to create attractive spaces that are convenient for human use and perform valued natural processes. Discover how buildings are located and the surrounding landscape can be shaped for accessibility, to manage stormwater runoff effectively, to facilitate landscape development and care, and to minimize disruption. Learn about site layout, grading and drainage and apply your know-how in a realistic design project. Communicate technical instructions with confidence and clarity and produce drawings for your design portfolio. Topics covered include site development standards and regulations; site layout; contours and grading; low-impact design and stormwater management and construction documentation. This course is three credit hours.
Qualifications/Requirements of Position
Experience teaching in a post-secondary educational institution. Excellent oral and written communication in English is required, as well as collegiality, organization and interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to work in a team environment. An undergraduate or graduate degree in landscape architecture is required as well as full membership in the Atlantic Provinces Association of Landscape Architects, or eligibility for full membership. The incumbent will be required to obtain a Chinese Visa, with Dalhousie’s assistance.
