Associate producer, assigned to visuals (English Services) (On-Site)

Your role

CBC Edmonton is looking for a creative self-starter and collaborative team player who is passionate about reaching new audiences and bringing local news stories to life through visual storytelling.

That creative and dynamic associate producer will help produce original and engaging visual content on our TV, digital, streaming and social platforms.

As a member of the CBC Edmonton cross-platform visual team, you will write compelling news programming and interview scripts for a visual story line-up that provides audiences with the context they need, wherever they seek that information. That work is rooted in CBC Edmonton’s 6 o’clock TV newscast, but carries over into the CBC News app, streaming channels and video platforms such as YouTube and TikTok.

As someone who lives and breathes the news, you are a critical thinker and an excellent communicator who knows how to drive news stories forward in ways that are highly adaptable to a variety of online video platforms. You are excited about building bridges between television news audiences and those who discover CBC Edmonton’s stories in a constantly evolving digital landscape.

You understand the diverse and changing population in Edmonton and northern Alberta, and the importance of broadening the range of perspectives, experiences and points of view reflected on our programming, especially those from people who have been traditionally underrepresented in the media. In your work, you will ensure CBC journalistic standards are met and that our stories are fair, balanced, accurate, thoughtful and immediate.

This role requires a full-time on-site presence.

Note: This is a permanent, full-time opportunity. Regular working hours will be Monday through Friday, 10:15 a.m.- 6:30 p.m. The successful candidate will need to be flexible around working varied shifts based on operational needs which can include evenings and weekends.

Your responsibilities:

  • Collaborate on the development and structure of CBC Edmonton’s TV news programming with an aim to engage and inform audiences, while deepening our community connections.
  • Contribute to the creation of the program lineups, including adding or removing items, helping determine priorities, vetting scripts, and inputting details pertaining to story format, timing, supers or other relevant directions.
  • Conduct research and interviews, find and edit video, write scripts, and package stories as needed.
  • Promote show content that will have a life on other video platforms and creatively share stories between the platforms to reach new audiences.
  • As necessary, assist in taking television newscasts to air from the control room, including communicating with staff in the field, studio or other locations.
  • Respond quickly to breaking news events as they unfold.
  • Distill large amounts of complex information under tight time constraints.
  • Chase and book interviews and help set the hosts up for success through scripting and background information.

Your profile:

  • A positive, mission-driven team player who seeks solutions through collaboration.
  • Demonstrated experience working in a fast-paced daily news environment
  • An ability to generate, pitch and pursue strong, original video story ideas.
  • Strong news judgment and a demonstrated ability to react quickly to breaking news and changing priorities, and chase multiple stories at once.
  • An understanding of Alberta’s political landscape, economic drivers and demographics, and a strong proven connection to the communities we serve in and around Edmonton.
  • A proven work ethic and strong communication skills.
  • Superior writing and visual storytelling skills, editorial skills, experience working with a program lineup, and competency with video editing.
  • A highly adaptable mindset with a proven willingness to embrace change as CBC television works to reach and engage new audiences.
  • A strong desire to live and promote the values of diversity and an inclusive and respectful work culture.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s licence as well as a driving record that meets the minimum requirements of CBC/Radio-Canada's insurance company.
  • University degree in journalism or equivalent with a minimum of two years of recent, related experience, including at least one year of experience writing for video broadcast news.
  • Ability and willingness to work flexible hours as required.
  • A willingness to learn and grow

Please include additional documentation or a link to any online demo of your work in your cover letter.

Candidates may be subject to skills and knowledge testing.

We thank all applicants for their interest, but only candidates selected for an interview will be contacted.

As part of our recruitment process, candidates who advance to the next

step will be asked to complete a background check. This includes:

  • A mandatory Criminal record check.

  • Other background checks may be conducted based on the operational requirements of the position.
