Job description

At BrandSafway, we know our employees are our greatest asset, which is why we give them the tools, training, and resources to be successful. Come join our growing team!

We are looking for a Manager, Environment, Health & Safety (EHS) to provide leadership and expertise in occupational health, safety, and environmental programs to prevent workplace injuries, illnesses, and environmental incidents. This role partners with branch and field management to develop, implement, and continuously improve safety programs across assigned branches and job sites throughout British Columbia. The successful candidate will help ensure compliance with all applicable federal and provincial legislation, including WorkSafeBC, the Workers Compensation Act, Occupational Health and Safety Regulation (OHSR), applicable environmental regulations, Transport Canada (TDG) requirements, and other relevant regulatory standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct regular inspections of branches, yards, warehouses, manufacturing facilities, offices, and construction/job sites throughout British Columbia to maintain a strong safety presence and ensure compliance with company policies and regulatory requirements.
  • Evaluate multiple branches to verify that safety management systems are effectively implemented and maintained in accordance with WorkSafeBC regulations, company policies, and industry best practices (including audits of Job Safety Plans (JSPs), company Safety Observation System, Employee Involvement Safety program, Daily Toolbox Talks, safety recognition programs, work instructions, and employee training).
  • Coach and mentor employees, supervisors, and managers on safe work practices and proactively intervene when unsafe acts or conditions are observed while reinforcing the company's Life Saving Rules.
  • Deliver instructor-led occupational health and safety training for employees working in yards, warehouses, plants, offices, and field operations.
  • Maintain accurate records of all health and safety training, certifications, competency assessments, inspections, audits, and regulatory documentation.
  • Investigate workplace incidents, injuries, near misses, and hazardous occurrences to determine root causes, identify corrective actions, and ensure required reporting is completed in accordance with company procedures and WorkSafeBC requirements.
  • Manage occupational injury and illness claims, working closely with Human Resources, supervisors, healthcare providers, and WorkSafeBC to support early and safe return-to-work programs while minimizing claim costs.
  • Liaise with internal departments and external agencies including WorkSafeBC, regulatory authorities, emergency services, environmental agencies, and industry associations as required.
  • Coordinate and facilitate annual emergency preparedness exercises, including fire evacuation drills and emergency response planning.
  • Lead Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC) meetings (or Worker Health and Safety Representative meetings where applicable), maintain meeting records, and oversee completion of corrective actions.
  • Develop, review, and maintain workplace hazard assessments, risk assessments, safe work procedures, and Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs).
  • Partner with Corporate EHS, Operations, Human Resources, and branch leadership to ensure health, safety, and environmental programs are effectively implemented and continuously improved.
  • Monitor safety performance metrics, identify trends, and establish annual safety objectives for assigned locations.
  • Support environmental compliance initiatives, including spill prevention, waste management, hazardous materials management, and environmental incident reporting where applicable.
  • Assist with contractor safety management and ensure subcontractors comply with company and regulatory safety requirements.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in an Environmental, Health & Safety role within construction, industrial or manufacturing.
  • Certificate, diploma, or degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Health & Safety, or a related discipline is preferred.
  • Professional designation such as OH&S, CRSP or NCSO or working toward certification is considered an asset.
  • Thorough knowledge of the Workers Compensation Act, WorkSafeBC Occupational Health and Safety Regulation, and applicable federal health and safety legislation.
  • Experience working within COR (Certificate of Recognition) certified safety management systems is considered an asset.
  • Valid Class 5 BC Driver's Licence with the ability to travel throughout British Columbia (vehicle allowance provided).
  • Ability to work at heights and conduct field visits at construction and industrial job sites.
  • Current health and safety certifications such as WHMIS, Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG), Fall Protection, Confined Space Entry, Lockout/Tagout, Forklift, First Aid, and Incident Investigation are considered strong assets.
  • Strong leadership skills with demonstrated ability to coach, mentor, and influence employees and leaders at all organizational levels.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, presentation, and facilitation skills.
  • Experience developing and implementing site-specific Environmental, Health & Safety programs aligned with corporate standards.
  • Strong incident investigation and root cause analysis skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and safety management software.
  • Ability to travel approximately 10–20%, including occasional overnight travel.
