About the Role:

Reporting to the Manager, Technical Operations & Machine Shop, the Instrument Service Technician provides service, maintenance, and technical support for mechanical, and electronic equipment across research and teaching laboratories. The incumbent is responsible for troubleshooting, repairing, calibrating, and maintaining a wide range of scientific instruments to ensure safe, reliable, and continuous operation. The incumbent also supports equipment installation, commissioning, and laboratory infrastructure (including utilities and compressed gas systems), while collaborating with Shop teams, faculty, staff and students on research initiatives. With a strong focus on safety, documentation, and client service, the Instrument Service Technician contributes to efficient lab operations and a high-quality research and teaching environment.

The Instrument Service Technician will:

  • Perform routine preventive maintenance, including daily, weekly, and monthly inspections of scientific equipment across campus;
  • Respond promptly to equipment alarms, faults, and breakdowns to minimize disruption for researchers, students, and staff;
  • Troubleshoot and diagnose equipment issues in collaboration with Electronics and Mechanical Shop personnel;
  • Provide after-hours or on-call support for critical equipment operating continuously, as required;
  • Maintain accurate technical records, work instructions, and service documentation in both digital and manual formats, asset tracking and catalogue of equipment database;
  • Conduct diagnostics, initiate parts procurement, and complete component repair or replacement;
  • Maintain shop tools, service equipment, and instruments in safe working condition; report defects or improvement opportunities;
  • Assist with rigging, lifting, and relocation of laboratory equipment, ensuring safe handling and transportation;
  • Support the installation, setup, and commissioning of new and existing equipment, including connection to required utilities;
  • Collaborate with Shop teams and faculty to support research initiatives and technical projects;
  • Track and maintain accurate records of time, materials, consumables, and labour for operational reporting.

Key Skills and Experience:

  • Trade Certificate of Qualification as a General Machinist, Tool and Die Maker or Millwright;
  • College Diploma in Computer/Electronics Engineering Technologist (3 Year Program) or the equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Experience in a first-class machine shop, including designing and reading blueprints, knowledge of research and teaching apparatus, and basic knowledge of sciences;
  • Understanding of simple machines, metallurgy, bearing design, vacuum practices and scientific terminology;
  • Ability to comprehend design and construction procedures set by manager;
  • Electronic diagnostic skills in analog and digital systems;
  • Ability to analyze circuits, carry out measurements, identify faults with corrective repair;
  • Knowledge of embedded microcontroller design, including circuit design and C or Python programming;
  • Ability to constantly learn about the equipment, changes in technology, emerging products, and best practices in the field;
  • Ability to comprehend laboratory practices, chemicals and methods, WHMIS and lab safety;
  • Computer skills and the usage of Windows based operating systems and Microsoft programs;
  • Customer service skills, the ability to discern customer needs, and the ability to communicate effectively with all contacts;
  • Ability to work as part of a team and with minimal supervision;
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize jobs to provide high levels of precision and quality service; and
  • Excellent attention to detail and sound judgement.

Preferred or Asset Skills:

  • Understanding of electrical (AC/DC current), sensors, motors and drives, and circuitry;
  • Certified in use and installation of compressed gases and regulators;
  • Certified in advanced vacuum practices and bearing design;
  • Radiation training, lab safety certificate;
  • First Aid and CPR;
  • RF and Microwave electronic design;
  • Experience working with high voltage, high vacuum, pressurized steam, high magnetic fields and ionizing radiation.

Salary and Total Rewards:

  • Job Grade K, Salary Scale ($62,115-99,384);
  • Target Hiring Range: $62,115-$65,000*
  • This is a permanent position that includes:
