The ideal candidate is a warm and loving person who makes meaningful connections with those they are caring for.

Personal Support Workers (PSWs) are the heart of long-term care, supporting residents with daily routines and meaningful moments that protect dignity, comfort and choice. PSW reports to the Home Area Lead. The PSW provides hands-on personal care, promotes restorative approaches that support independence, and contributes to a safe, welcoming home guided by the Residents’ Bill of Rights. Committed to person-centered and culturally safe care, recognizing and respecting each resident’s identity, language, values, and lived experience in every interaction.. Enhances restorative care by promoting independence of activities of daily liability. Enhances the therapeutic effects of the bathing process and provides the resident with an environment and bathing options, which meet their needs and add to their quality of life. Works closely with the Nursing Restorative Therapist.

  • Provide assistance with personal care and ADLs (e.g., dressing, grooming, toileting, mobility, transfers, feeding) according to the resident’s plan of care.
  • Encourage independence by offering cues, time, and adaptive supports—maximizing what residents can do while honoring choice and self-determination.
  • Support bathing routines in a way that enhances comfort and dignity (respecting preferences for timing, privacy, water temperature, and bathing options) to improve quality of life.
  • Work closely with the Nursing/Restorative team to support restorative care goals and safe mobility.
  • Follow best practices for the required programs and carry out care interventions in the resident’s plan of care (e.g., falls prevention, skin/wound prevention, continence/bowel supports, pain cues/comfort measures, palliative approach supports, and expression of needs approaches.
  • Use approaches (e.g., GPA/BSO tools), identify and communicate triggers, and support written approaches to care that reduce escalation and promote safety and dignity.
  • Support a least-restraint approach by using alternatives first, following the care plan and direction of regulated staff.
  • Protect residents from harm and know what to do if abuse/neglect is suspected or witnessed—ensure immediate safety and report concerns promptly per policy.
  • Adhere the Home’s process for reporting incidents and complaints.
  • Complete accurate, at point of care, and objective documentation each shift in the electronic record (ADLs, mobility/transfers, continence, skin observations, nutrition/hydration, expression of needs, mood/affect, pain cues, and safety risks).
  • Understand standardized assessments (e.g., interRAI LTCF) support continuity and care planning; provide clear observations and input to the Clinical care lead.
  • Follow resident’s plan of care and documented approaches.
  • Monitor residents’ well-being and promptly report changes in physical, cognitive, expression of needs, and emotional status to the Clinical care lead.
  • Follow safe transfer practices and demonstrate competence with ceiling/mechanical lifts and mobility aids per policy.
  • Assist with meal service, snacks and nourishment delivery, and feeding as required, following swallowing/texture and safety directions where applicable.
  • Ensure personal care items are clean, labelled, and accessible; maintain a clean, safe care environment during care routines.
  • Promote and protect resident dignity, privacy, autonomy, and respectful relationships—consistent with the Residents’ Bill of Rights.
  • Provide culturally safe, inclusive care by:
    • Asking “what matters to you today?” and adapting routines to resident preferences, language, faith/spiritual needs, and cultural practices (within safety requirements).
    • Communicating respectfully with residents and families, recognizing diverse family structures, identities, and traditions.
  • Maintain professional communication with residents, families, and co-workers; demonstrate kindness and the ability to “change the moment positively” for residents.
  • Follow routine practices and additional precautions as required (hand hygiene, PPE use, cleaning/disinfection steps within role, respiratory etiquette) and participate in outbreak measures (cohorting workflows, signage adherence, reporting symptoms immediately).
  • Work safely and follow all health and safety procedures, including safe lifting/mobility practices, PPE, and reporting hazards, incidents, or injuries promptly.
  • Participate in required training (e.g., WHMIS, safe lifting, violence/harassment prevention, outbreak/IPAC training) and follow supervisor directions for safe work.
  • Help maintain a safe environment for residents, visitors, and staff by identifying risks early and escalating concerns.
  • Follow the Home’s emergency procedures (e.g., fire, evacuation, missing resident, power disruption, outbreak surge workflows) and participate in drills and emergency preparedness education as required.
